Post Season Awards Empty Post Season Awards

Post  EBlessNHSP Sat Mar 13, 2010 6:35 pm

For those of you interested, here is the official process per the NHBCO:

Mr. & Miss New Hampshire Basketball Criteria

The award is not JUST based upon basketball performance, but also sportsmanship and academic achievement. Mr. and Ms. New Hampshire are to be the best all around representatives of high school basketball in the state of New Hampshire.

It is strongly recommended that the coach submitting a player into nomination attend the committee review and selection meeting and make the presentation on behalf of the nominee. Required information and forms are posted on the NHBCO website and may be downloaded www.eteamz.com/nhbco (see icons “Handouts” “NHBCO Paperwork”)

Any New Hampshire varsity coach may nominate a player: however, the nominee’s coach must submit the nominee’s credentials to an ad hoc committee that will meet at the conclusion of the NHBCO annual, end of season meeting.

The chair of the committee and any member of the committee shall be automatically disqualified if he or she has a player nominated for the award.

The coach of the nominee should be prepared with the credentials of their nominee, and be prepared and available to address the committee, if requested. This may be for individual clarification of unclear documentation or should the committee desire to have all nominee coaches make verbal presentations.

There will be separate Mister and Miss committees. The committees will work and make decisions independent of the other.

Both committees shall submit a written report to the President at conclusion of nominees review and the selection of the award recipient. Both committees shall conduct either written or verbal scoring and voting to determine award recipient.

Only one boy and one girl may be selected. Ties shall be settled.

Both the Mister and Miss committees will use the following to rank nominees.

The nominee must meet these 3 standards (weight)
• Academic excellence (25%)
• Sportsmanship (25%)
• Basketball accomplishments (50%)

Scoring for breaking a tie in the committee voting:
1 to 5 points for Academic,
1 to 5 points for Sportsmanship, and
1 to 10 points for Basketball Accomplishments

Girls: Tiffany Ruffin, Winnacunnet

Below is the Gatorage press release:

This award DOES include prep players as far as I can tell. Last year the boys winner was Alex Oriakhi from Tilton School who now plays at UCONN.

Note: This is the THIRD consecutive year she's won this honor.

Post Season Awards Empty Mr. and Miss NH Basketball Player and Jack Ford Scholar Athlete Awards

Mr. and Miss NH Basketball Player and Jack Ford Scholar Athlete Awards

CONCORD – This year’s Mr. and Miss NH Basketball award winners have made big impacts on the high school hoop scene.

These prestigious awards were two of the several presented by the New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization yesterday at the Granite State Games, four all-star games featuring seniors from around the state, held on the New Hampshire Technical Institute campus in Concord.

Tiffany Ruffin, the Miss NH of hoop, believed to be the first woman in the nation to win three straight Gatorade Player of the Year Awards, helped Winnacunnet of Hampton claim four straight Class L championships.

Mr. NH’s Alex Burt simply changed the culture of basketball in Dover. His dedication and devotion to hoop helped a Dover team that went 3-15 in 2006 to a Final Four finish this season.

“He has been the hardest worker I’ve ever had in my 16 years of coaching,” said Dover coach Mike Romps. “No one understands how hard work equals success better than he does. He got players working out and trying harder.”

He’s also impacting the future, working two to three basketball clinics each month for Dover grade school children and conducting his own workout sessions with middle school players.

“The evolution of his game is a testament to his stubbornness and his will to be greatness,” said Romps. Despite being cut from five AAU teams, Burt worked to improve his shortcomings and continued trying out.

He became one of the best pure shooters in Class L basketball, averaging 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and one steal as a senior. He took over games with his hot shooting streaks and leadership and is contemplating playing at prep school or college next season.

Boston College-bound Ruffin is one of the most decorated and successful basketball players around. In addition to repeated Gatorade honors, she is a four-time all-state choice, reigning two-time reigning New Hampshire Union Leader Player of the Year and the 2009 Red Rolfe Athlete of the Year (correct name?).

“She is the number one player in this part of the universe for doing what she does best and that’s making everyone around her better,” said Winnacunnet coach Ed Beattie. Three of her teammates were all-state choices this season.

“She’s been a class person and player since she stepped on the court as a freshman,” said Beattie. She also was unstoppable, exceeding the high expectations heaped on her and her team.

As a senior she averaged 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals while her team went 25-0. She posted 13 double-double games (points and either rebounds or assists) and three double-doubles.

SCHOLARS: Kearsarge of Sutton senior Anna Prohl and Winnacunnet of Hampton senior Ryan Dunn received the Coach Jack Ford Scholarship Athlete Award, presented to players succeeding on the court, in the classroom and through community service.

A team captain and four-year letter winner, Prohl averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals this season. She played varsity soccer and outdoor track for four seasons.

She owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class and volunteers time as a tutor, coach, mentor and leader to youth, underprivileged families and fellow students. Prohl will attend Bowdoin College.

This year Dunn captained the Warriors soccer and basketball team and earned all-state honors while providing over 200 hours of community service to a number of organizations and causes, including Special Olympics and the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire.

Dunn averaged over four assists a game as a three-year starting point guard. He helped lead the Warriors – the team the late Ford once coached - to the Class L title game. Ranked fourth in his class, Dunn intends to play soccer at Boston College.
