2009 Notes:
Finished 2nd in the National League Cy Young voting. Was the Player's Choice for N.L. Comeback Player of the Year and chosen by the Boston BBWAA as the Tony Conigliaro Award winner...Named the Wilbur "Bullet" Rogan Award winner as the Negro League's choice for National League Pitcher of the Year...Was the first Cardinals pitcher to win the N.L. ERA title (2.24) since Joe Magrane (2.18) in 1988. Led the N.L. in ERA (2.00) in the day and was 2nd in road ERA (2.05)...His .810 winning pct. (17-4) led the majors...Allowed just 7 HR's, the lowest HR/9 IP ratio (0.33) in the majors. His 1.78 walks/9 IP ratio ranked 3rd in the N.L...Was 11-0 vs. N.L. Central foes with a 1.58 ERA and .205 opponent's BA...His 11-game winning streak from 7/5 to 9/7 was the longest in the Majors. Was the 2nd double-digit win streak of his career (13 straight in 2005); he & Bob Gibson (three times; 15 in 1968, 10 in 1970 & 11 in 1972) are the only Cardinals with two or more winning streaks of 10 or more...His 0.71 ERA after first six starts was the lowest ever by a Cardinals pitcher in first six starts to begin a season. He became lone Cardinals pitcher in data since 1954 to not allow an earned run in first four starts to begin a season...He lost back-to-back starts from June 25-30 for just the 3rd time as a Cardinal...Was the N.L. Pitcher of the Month for August when he went 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA in six starts, walked 7 and fanned 37...Had a one-hit shutout with 10 K's on Labor Day (9/7 at MIL), the second of his career; Bob Gibson (1970 & 1971) and Ernie Broglio (1960) are the only other Cardinals pitchers to fan 10 or more in a shutout while limiting the opponent to one hit or less...Hit his first career HR, a grand slam in 10/1 win at CIN. It was the 10th slam by a Cardinals pitcher and he also drove in six runs, a Cardinals record for a pitcher.
