Pembroke basketball assistant coach Segal resigns from team

By DREW BONIFANT

Sunday, December 21, 2014

Dave Segal, an assistant coach with the Pembroke Academy boys’ basketball team, announced Friday on the Spartans’ basketball Facebook page that he resigned from the position, the result, he said, of not being given the opportunity to coach the Spartans during Coach Matt Alosa’s season-opening suspension.

“In a coaches meeting with Athletic Director Suzanne Klink, she informed the staff that JV coach Eric Hussey will be the coach for the 2 games that Matt was suspended,” Segal wrote in a post that has since been removed. “I found this unacceptable based on my tenure and experience, and immediately resigned my duties.”

Alosa was suspended for the first two games of this season as part of an agreement to allow the Spartans to play Division I basketball this season. Soon after the ruling, Segal, a paid assistant with Alosa for seven years, told the coach that he should run the team in Alosa’s stead, and that Alosa agreed.

“I said ‘Matt, I’m expecting to coach that game.’ And he agreed,” Segal, 55, said in an interview Friday. “He led me to believe I would be. I put the time in, I coached with his dad (Frank) at Trinity for six years.”

Segal said that was the impression he was left with, but it wasn’t how things played out during Tuesday’s meeting.

“(Klink) didn’t say anything. She just sat us down and said ‘this is the way it’s going to be,’ ” Segal said. “… It caught me by surprise when she told me that.”

Segal, who used the terms “second-in-command” and “right-hand man” when describing his role with the team, said resigning wasn’t a question at that point.

“Absolutely not. No second thoughts,” said Segal, who said he had had conversations with family and the team’s fans about coaching the games. “I put a lot of time in, we won two state championships. I wasn’t going to sit on the bench and let the JV coach be in charge. For me, that’s humiliating. … I decided it was the final straw.”

Calls to Alosa were not returned. Reached for comment, Klink did not elaborate on the situation.

“I can’t talk about personnel matters,” she said. “I just can’t do that out of respect for personnel.”

Segal, who also coached with the AAU Granite State Raiders, joined the Spartans for the 2007-08 season. He said he’s still looking to return to the court with another coaching gig, whether at the AAU, high school or other levels.

“I’d be interested. I’ve already had a conversation with an AAU coach about getting involved in that again,” he said. “I definitely am interested in that.”

As for his time with the Spartans, he said winning back-to-back Division II titles in 2013 and ’14 will be the lasting memories.

“I have two state championship rings that I can wear. I’m pretty proud of that,” he said. “No one can take that away. We accomplished a lot. It was fun.”

Someone needs a hobby

Post  SoccerfanNH on Sun Dec 21, 2014 3:12 pm

How petty can someone be? Really? In any NHIAA school a JV coach ALWAYS fills in for a varsity coach who can't be there.

One thing this coach who quit is forgetting, is that the liability for the team rests on someone who is under contract with the school. I have to wonder if the PA administration is looking at liability issues with this decision. I also have to question a coach who feels they are "superior" to the junior varsity coach?

The real issue here is that the Concord Monitor needs to just leave Pembroke alone. They are a high school program, not a college program. Honestly, who cares about an assistant coach that NOBODY has heard about other than the AAU circles. When did assistant coaches leaving a high school program become a story?

Dear Ray Duckler & the rest of the Monitor - leave Pembroke alone and just report the games!

I'm guessing there are a lot of people out there hoping Alosa will do the honarable thing and stand by his and Dad's right hand man and resign...not gonna happen!

I'm pretty sure the admin at Pembroke are on high alert for the basketball program and want to do what they think is best.  This coach that resigned showed how selfish he really is by not supporting the administrations decision.  I don't know who the "a lot of people out there" besides opposing schools who want Alosa to resign are...?  If that was going to happen it would have in the scheduling controversy.

No doubt the powers that be at Pembroke are on high alert. They have just been alerted that a selfish coach was amongst their ranks. And how long has he been coaching with that family tree? If it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, chances are it is a...

There are more suits on the Pembroke bench than reserves.  I imagine they'll get along fine without him.

I can see why he resigned. I mean you are 55, you are a yes man to Matt, and feel that these two games were your time to shine. I mean, after all, you had conversations with your family and teams fans... You mean students and parents... See pro teams have fans. College teams have fans. High school games are attended by students and parents. Sad.

This is news, why shouldn't a newspaper cover it.  I don't attend Pembroke's practices.  I don't see them play very often.  I assume that all the commenters do, they have so many opinions.   Who is the JV coach?  Is he a teacher in the building?  Does the JV coach attend every varsity practice?  Is he Alosa's assistant as much as he is the JV head man?  I want to know what is Segal's role at practice?   What is his relationship with the players? Does he simply bring Alosa's coffee?

I tend to side with him.   Coaches give enough of their time to their teams and schools.  When you are working for about $1.50 per hour, sometimes respect counts for a lot.

He's an assistant. Not news. The monitor just stirs the pot. I bet few if any other coaches know him, or will even realize he's not there. Seems very petty and small.

SoccerfanNH:

Do you think PA put out a presser about him leaving? Seems unlikely to me PA would want to place more attention upon their boys basketball program. Sure if it was the head coach, they may say he's resigned. Do you think the CM has someone that goes to every practice and talks to the coaches after each one to get the latest scoop? Seems like an unusual use of resources given that physical papers are in a budget crunch. So just think it through and perhaps come to a different conclusion how the CM found out... If the focus is supposed to be on the kids, then why would a long time assistant just not say he left for personal reasons and ask the CM to not make a big deal out of it. I kind of doubt there's another HS progam looking to snap up one of the PA assistants - it's not like Coach K's top dog leaving Duke.

988 people currently "like" this FB page.  The site links to CM articles about the team.  Doesn't take a lot of investigative journalism to figure this one out.

It looks like the post has since been removed.

At JAF and Seacoastdad I agree 100%. I think the monitor can do better and just leave PA alone. Let the play hoop and report onthe games.
