Division 1 Boy's Preview Empty Division 1 Boy's Preview

Post  Tuesday and Friday on Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:56 pm

At the end of the summer there was no question in my mind there would be a repeat of the Trinity - BG championship game from last year in the 2012 Ship at UNH. Bad body language, transfers and new academic policies in certain school districts has now realigned my 2012 Ship mind at UNH and added 6 to 7 teams that could take it all from 3 to 4 teams. Even though the top 8 teams all have their proficiencies, all 8 teams have large Achilles heels going into the season which will make for an exciting 3 months of basketball. There are teams that have to get over mental humps, there are teams that have to behave better on and off the basketball court to make it to the Final Four at UNH and there are teams that fly under the radar for half the season, but some how are still playing in mid-March.

1) Trinity could have the best "pure" starting lineup in the state. 5 - Lauderdale 4 - Gabriel 3 - Carmen G 2 - Hamel 1 - Sistare. When this line up clicks I don't think any other starting lineup can match it in D1. Gabriel will be a nightmare for teams to defend this year. How many teams in the D1 have a 4 that can guard Gabriel on a consistent basis? Good luck opposing teams. The word glue and Carmen Giampetruzzi will be used in a lot of sentences this year. He's unselfish, will set up mates and score when called upon. He's a winner. Over/Under for a Jake Hamel shot winning games for Trinity this season: 2 1/2. He brings intangibles to the table on a nightly basis. He loves making a good assist as much as a dagger 3. How can Trinity win a championship with a freshman point guard? Good question. Sistare will make mistakes early, but the Feb and March point guard Sistare will be a lot better than the Dec and Jan one. Oh yea, Trinity brings 6'10 Aluko, defensive specialist Viscarello and slasher Keefe off the bench. Aluko needs to confer with the Tin Man to get some more heart on the court. Pretty good rotation of 8 players. Some would say a championship rotation.

2) Central has a lot of parts to make a serious run at the championship. Unfortunately, it will be a missing part hurting this team. Dylan Lafond will be the most missed player in D1 going into the season. Not having Lafond will attack the guard depth like a disease in some games for the Little Green. If you see Gabe LaCount handling the ball more in pressure situations it won't be good for Central. LaCount needs to concentrate on consistently scoring more if Central wants to raise the trophy. Too many times last year LaCount disappeared in games. There will be some nights he looks like 1st team all state. Junior Brown's motor is always running. If he can keep another body part of his from running too much he could have a very good year. Troy Pelletier is Tough with a capital T. Ortega makes Central longer and taller. He can defend the Tyler Gendron's and Mabor Gabriel's of D1. He is very important to Central's season.

3) BG has a totally new cast of players, but somehow Migs must put all these players into a blender and add leadership, sportsmanship and a couple of "Go To McClung/Green" facsimiles. The dynamic of this team will be fascinating to watch this season. They have talent in McCarthy, Holler, Lunn, Paul, Chartrand and Kesty. BG will have one of the top guard rotations in the state. I don't know what CJ Boykins will show up on any given night? He can be just as much a liability as an asset with his volatile on court personality. A big question for BG will be cohesiveness in the Getting Along Dept. Getting along with referees, fellow mates and with Coach Migs. Chartrand is a player to watch. He's tough and can play a couple of different positions. McCarthy can have an all state season. Holler has to put more energy to playing basketball and less energy towards....well, you know what I mean. Jeff Lunn might become the most important player on this team. He can give the Cardinals a much needed inside presence. Logan Kesty must be more consistent for BG to make a serious run. Coach Migs coaching senses will certainly be tested with this voraciously clashing set of personalities.

4) Alvrine has two bulls in Tomaswick and Beaulieu. They are another 2nd half team. They are tough for any team to play. The Broncos will have a very good starting lineup. Dunn, Doyle and Livingston will give Bronco Land hope for another Final Four appearance. Will they have the depth of one of the other top teams? That's for Coach Garon to work out.

5) Spaulding was one Joe McCarthy 3 pointer away from going to Durham last year. GNG will even admit he thought BG was a dead Cardinal in the water near the end of that memorable quarterfinal game last season. I'm buying into Spaulding. Dominic Paradis might have a monster year. Coach Cronin has a nice system going in Red Raider Land. They don't wow you with talent or athleticism, but they just play solid basketball while being well coached. The players at Spaulding buy into Cronin's system. That counts for something over the grind of a season. Don't judge Spaulding by their first half of the season. Judge them by their 2nd half and where they wind up when it counts.

6) Merrimack is another fascinating team to watch this season. They might have the best 1-2 punch in D1 with Floras and Gendron. I really liked what I saw of Tyler Gendron last year. He plays the game right and is a true sportsman. He won the sportsmanship award at the QCIBT last year. I hear Merrimack "With Floras" talk and Merrimack "Without Floras" talk. It is all interesting. One question: When was the last time Merrimack played in the Final Four at UNH? It was a while ago. The end of the season has been pretty sour for Merrimack the last couple of years. Until they get over the hump I can't put them in the top 4. Too many times Merrimack hasn't been the same team in the 2nd half of the season they were in the 1st half.

7) South has had a couple of rough seasons the last 2 years with injuries and transfers. I think they will have a bounce back year with Muccioli leading the way with the Preston brothers. Coach Maz will have the South players on a mission this year. South will be a team nobody wants to play, especially in tournament time.

Cool Pinkerton's season rests on the health of Alex Patrikis. If he can stay injury free he can team up with a nice backcourt of Light and Colbert to bring Pinkerton back in the D1 hunt.

9) Salem will fly under the radar, but will be another "Don't want to play them" team. I love Rob McLaughlin as a coach. He did some really nice things in his first season. Klecan and Salvo will form a very good and underrated backcourt. Ruffen, Dube and Hartman will be typical Blue Devil paint muscle. This Salem team will continue to test the physicality of teams.

10) North: If you want to know why I have them here see some of the description of the Merrimack team. North does not have a good track record. I think the fact they didn't play Fall League speaks volumes in the silence of not competing in the league. This athletic and talented bunch of Titans might prove me wrong and be in the Top 4 all season and make a serious run at the title. If they do then it will be great for the competitiveness and balance of D1 basketball. I don't want to see what this team does when things are going well. I want to see what they do and how they handle the bumps in the D1 basketball road. Their shock absorbers haven't worked too well the last couple of seasons.

On the cusp: Memorial, Dover and Exeter.

I dont see why not playing fall ball is a bad thing,

I think fall ball is the most overrated thing when it comes to hoops,

Summer is important but fall half the players are missing do to fall sports and the only thing I remember in the last few years coming out of the fall season is Jake Nelson injury.

I am not sure how good Catholic Memorial is this year but North put a pounding on them in scrimmage Sunday.

Division 1 Boy's Preview Empty Right when I think I'm out they pull me back in.

Sorry I am late with the preview I had it written up yesterday and my computer went down. Got home from work, no time, pregame festivities, postgame festivities, you get the picture. Very Happy

People that come here know I write it, it usually happens. BG in football after they lost 7 million seniors 2 years ago, who said they would win it. Tarrier thought no way. Yours truly. Exeter last season, me. BG in hoops last season, me. Oh yeah, Connor Green player of the year, who predicted that when most had him 2nd team all state. Cool

T@F, your picks are certainly better then last year. Who could forget you had WEST,and DOVER getting to the final four? Embarassed Who did I have, you ask? BG, TRINITY, CENTRAL,and MEMORIAL. Three out of four, not to shabby. Cool

West, I still get a chuckle out of that. Without further ado the 4 teams that will go to UNH.

BG. Migs builds programs. Not one year wonders. These kids are ready to rock and roll, and they are DEEP.

TRINITY. Can't teach height.

Not Wilson, not Rawlings, SPAULDING. You thought their football team was good, wait until you see these guys get after it. Tough with a capital T.

CENTRAL. Doc has athletes. Doc loves athletes.

BREAKOUT PLAYER OF THE YEAR. Jeff LUNN. Big kid, plays hard. sunny

ALL TEBOW TEAM. Kids who play with heart.

VISCARELLO. doesn't want to lose.

CHARTRAND AND HOLLER. They play hard on both ends of the floor.

PARADIS. Love watching this kid play. santa

UNDER THE RADAR MAJOR PLAYA- COOPER PAUL. Injuries have hindered him his first 3 years at Guertin. Watch out, this boy is healthy, and hungry. Another reason I love the kid. He lives in Merrimack. Very Happy Very Happy

Memorial. Fitzy laying in the weeds with a young bunch of athletes. They will get better as the season goes on. Could be this year's ALVIRNE.

Tully - you just sent a cold chill down my spine... Please there can only be one GNG! I don't think the rest of us could take a second one!

GNG - you must have had quite a few GREEN n GOLD drinks yesterday. Love your enthusiasm for the boys... I think Joe is going to be a monster this year, but there's more "basketball players" that would be chosen before him. Not knocking him, just being realistic that it'd be tough to have the NH PoY not be heading off to college to play basketball (he has a baseball scholarship at SNHU). I remember the comments from the Spaulding side in last year's playoff game - who the (ahem) "heck" is this guy? He was raining/draining 3's. Spaulding hadn't seen him the first time out. That could be the key - once he got recognized, coaches changed their defensive plan on him. Still, it's a pick your poison - cover Joe with big and that'll open the inside game a bit more. Cover Joe with a quicker, smaller, in your face player and that leaves the other BG 3 point shooters more open. Last year BG was more of a 2-man show - this year I think they have a lot more options and depth. As long as the ball keeps moving through everyone's hands and it doesn't stop somewhere too long, they will be a tough team to beat.

JAF- remember the big kid from Pinky a couple of years ago when they won it. He went on to play baseball at Franklin Pierce. I can't remember if he got POY or not but he was a horse.

Nope that's his name. Thanks Asst,

Good article about the new North coach in The Telegraph.

Sounds like he isn't thrilled with the work ethic of his team.

JAF, I was talking to T@F at the game Friday night. Is it true that your favorite all time singer is Pat Boone {and his white leather shoes}, and that your favorite football player is Billy "White Shoes" Johnson? sunny

Inside joke folks, you had to be at the jv game to get it. lol!

Ha Ha. It was the longest 8 minutes.... Jimmy let me have it too - it was quite comical.

Could have been worse... Shoeless Joe Jackson comes to mind... Or Elvis and his Blue Suede Shoes...
