Very interesting first night of "Real" basketball in NH.

On the girl's side Memorial at Trinity, Londonderry at Keene and Winny at Central.

On the boy's side Somersworth is at Bow in a rematch of the D3 final from last season, Campbell at Raymond and in a couple of very enticing boy's scrimmages this evening:

Trinity is scrimmaging at Portsmouth and BG is scrimmaging at Pembroke....... Wow, too bad these teams couldn't play each other in real games. Word out of Portsmouth is that the Portsmouth students are going to attend this evening's scrimmage en masse to support their talented Clipper squad. It should be quite an atmosphere at Portsmouth. The BG at Pembroke scrimmage should feature some nice up tempo basketball with a saturation of intensity.

Pembroke will also be scrimmaging at Memorial next Monday.

You can almost hear the basketballs bouncing louder in NH Very Happy

We've got Portsmouth @ Oyster River tonight- it'll be interesting to see how Oyster River plays without Danielle Walczak, and the Legendary Dan Parr Makes his (re)debut with the PHS Girls! (he coached them for one year in the early 80's)

Caught a little bit of a PHS Girls vs Spaulding Girls scrimmage, the Clippers could go Twin Towers with Alicia Brown (who improved every game as a Soph last year) and Madeline Nossiff (also a shot blocking force). Should be a good one!

BG 65 Pembroke 63

BG 12 18 18 17 - 65
Pemb 14 22 12 15 - 63

Some really good matchups in this one. Boykins and Paul vs Maher. Holler vs Welch. Persons vs Paul and Kesty. It was just as fun seeing these individual matchups as it was to see the teams go against each other. Chartrand didn't play for BG because he is still nursing a football injury. McCarthy also didn't play for BG.

The first period was like two boxers feeling each other out. Defenses dominated for both teams as no one player really shined offensively. Pembroke broke open for 22 points in the 2nd period with typical Spartan basketball. They fast breaked and finished. They dribble drove and kicked the ball out for 3's by Persons and Welch. Migs had to call a couple of TOs to stem the Pembroke tide.

BG concentrated on their defense in the 3rd and forced numerous Pembroke turnovers. Alosa was now calling time outs to stem the Cardinal momentum. Cooper Paul and a big for BG (don't know his name) did some damage. BG's size advantage took it's toll on Pembroke as there were numerous times where BG had 3, 4 and 5 shots in one possession. This lack of rebounding and inside toughness could be a chink in the Spartan armor this season. Alosa certainly implored his players to be tougher in the paint.

The 4th quarter was back and forth. Both teams had costly turnovers down the stretch which lead to key baskets. It was a good showing for BG considering they were missing Chartrand and McCarthy. Persons and Welch had good games for Pembroke. Maher was inconsistent with his point play. Going against Paul and Boykins might have had something to do with it. Cooper Paul played a very nice game for BG. He will be a key component in the BG basketball machine this season. Boykins was off and on. When he's on he is a catalyst on offense and a disruptor on defense. Sometimes, he lets his emotions get the best of him. He picked up 3 fouls in the span of about 30 seconds, which is inexcusable. On another foul he slammed the basketball down, which would've richly deserved a technical on a Tuesday or Friday.

Now, listen up you basketball players. One player I was very impressed with overall attitude and sportsmanship tonight was 6'0 junior Matt Persons of Pembroke. He plays the game solid and soldiers on through thick and thin. He can hit the 3 and make a good pass when needed. His attitude is fantastic. There were a lot of other players in the scrimmage tonight that could learn a lesson or two from Persons on how to conduct yourself for 32 minutes. He is a consumate glue guy both in an athletic and mental way.

Article on the 73 - 46 Memorial victory over Trinity in the UL:

http://unionleader.com/article/20111210/SPORTS/712109963

Amra Elezovic had 20. Peace Kabari and Allie Hartford each had 11.

Winny beat Central 76 - 29. Kirsten O'Neil had 23 to lead the Warriors. Anna Sullivan also had 14. Winny forced 31 Central turnovers in the first 3 quarters. I was very happy to see Coach Wenners saying some nice things about his squad about executing. Maybe, Coach Wenners did have a winning lottery ticket, but hasn't told any one yet Wink

Interesting items from today's box scores on last night's games. (Absolutely love box scores):

- Pinky girls outscored Exeter 21 - 2 in the 1st quarter

- Exeter girls had 8 players who scored and combined for 23 points. The 8 players each scored between 1 to 4 points.

- Campbell girls had an impressive showing in their first game defeating Raymond 83 - 41. They blitzed Raymond with a 30 - 9 1st quarter. Becca Arnone scored 25 to pace Campbell.

- Joe Morin and Jordan Richard, one of the better back courts in the whole state, combined for 32 points in Raymond boys 53 - 42 loss to Campbell. The rest of the Raymond team combined for 10 points. Up and coming Campbell sophomore Jesiah Wade scored 15.

- Memorial girls have an international theme to their team this year. Check out these names:
Elezovic
Sweetser
Kubari
Dimou
Imamovic

- Winny girls have the March 17th box score for names. This St. Patty bunch combined for 49 of the 76 Winny points vs Central:
O'Neil
Sullivan
MacLeod
O'Connor

- Wait until you see the international flair in the Memorial boy's box score next week.
