Tuesday 1/4 Game Thread
Lots of big matchups today, and I just realized that Souhegan and Milford play TONIGHT! Will be interesting to see if Milford can beat the twice in a week. Couple of predictions/notes....
Souhegan @ Milford - Like Milford, but expect a close game. Tough to beat Milford in their gym though.
Manchester West @ Alvirne - West should come out of this one, but the Bronco's won 2 of their 3 games at the Chick-fil-A Tourney, so their have a little momentum.
Salem @ Manchester Memorial - 2 undefeateds. Memorial should take care of business and hand Salem their 1st loss.
Trinity @ Merrimack - Game of the Night, toss up for me. Seriously, I can't pick it.
Londonderry @ Spaulding - Red Raiders should prevail, but a stiffer test than Keene or Concord put up.
Dover @ St. Thomas Acquinas - Out of division "rivalry" (I guess) matchup. STA has a nice win vs. Kennett and a tough loss vs. Oyster River. Dover should win.
Girls Game of the Night - Winny @ Timberlane. 3-0 vs. 3-1. No idea who wins but on paper it's a nice matchup down in Plaistow.

Trinity 60 Merrimack 48 at Merri? Wow, kind of wish I'd been there. Anyone know, if Flores was back?
CHS 55 Exeter 44 - Exeter could have won it though Central had control of the game for the most part... but Exeter hung in and tied it and came close. Don't underestimate them. Also, not Central's best game. Their shots were pretty cold q3

News from the Merrimack - Trinity game. Dimitri Floras and Tyler Amigo were suspended for the game and did not play. I'm presuming this tilted the court in the Pioneers' favor tonight. Trinity scored a 1970s-like 60 points. Well, how about that?
Pembroke beat John Stark 70 - 62. I'll have more details later. Another game with a 1970s scoring like tinge to it.

Milford 62 Souhegan 52
Most of these teams wanted to refute my low scoring thesis for 2011. I love it.

Winny girls keep rolling along with a 54 - 31 victory over Timby.
How about the thrilling Pittsburgh girl's 31 - 17 victory over Profile School?
Pinkerton girls beat Concord 60 - 16. Yeeeesh.

My teenage daughter just got back from the Memorial - Salem game. I asked her what the final score was and she said Memorial had 40 something and Salem had 30 something.
I don't think my daughter is ready to be a member of the Forum.

You have that right, Tully !!
I don't think I'll send my daughter to a game with paper and a pen for details. She didn't say anything about the refereeing tonight...... Unlike the Boy Who Cried Wolf from Milford (MM Sr.).

Re: Tuesday 1/4 Game Thread
Milford won 72-62. Gilligan didn't play. I just want to say before people say Souhegan would've won had he played, we do not know that, the other players on Souhegan had to play at a very high level and do different things because Gilligan didn't play so yes he would've helped but they game would have been different and could they have won with him yes but they also could have lost still.
Milford really struggled shooting, Souhegan's contested all there shots and really made it difficult for them to hit from outside. Souhegan also hit the boards well. Milford was trying to out jump them but Souhegan just used the size got good position and hit the boards hard limiting second chance opportunities. Holder didn't seem to be in it something seemed to be bothering him, he still played well on D and picked it up in the 4th but he struggled. Mike O probably finished with around 20 it was rather quiet, other than in the 4th quarter when he really stepped up and got to the basket. Mikey came out really well and played very well all game I thought, he really kept the team going. Since they were struggling from three Mikey found ways to get players the ball in easy positions to score. Junior Logan Barlow really was a nice spark with about 6 first half points finished about about 8-10 which was huge. Milford also really struggled from the line missing numerous free throws and could've sealed the game earlier than they did. It was about a 6 point game the whole way Milford lead the whole game I believe largest lead being around 11. Souhegan got production from just about everyone that played, they were real scrappy no one person stood out just a great team effort for them.

John Stark - 15 12 15 20 - 62
Pembroke - 17 20 21 12 - 70
I didn't see most of the 1st quarter, but the story of the first half was the cold shooting of Patrick Welch and Greg LeBlond. It wasn't like the defense was superior against these 2 good scorers. They both had open looks, but found a lot of rim in the first half. Sophomore Matt Persons picked up the slack in the scoring department for the Spartans by scoring 12 in the 2nd period with 3 Threes and an And 1. 6'8 sophomore Zachary Gratton made his presence felt on the offensive glass with a couple of baskets on offensive rebounding put backs for the Generals. Pembroke took a solid 37 to 27 lead into the locker room at halftime. The teams traded baskets in the 3rd quarter with Pembroke going on a little run near the end of the 3rd to gain a 58 - 42 advantage going into the 4th period. Persons continued his hot shooting in the 3rd with a couple of 3's and a 2. Leblond heated up a little in the the 4th to bring JS within 10 points with just under 5 minutes to go. At this point Pembroke tried to put the game on ice with a spread offense with no intent of shooting unless there was a clear lay up. This tired JS a little. Leblond hit a 3 with 1:20 left to bring JS within 8 at 68 - 60. He fouled out shortly after. It then came down to Fts for the Spartans which they hit at a 50 % rate and still kept the door open for the Generals which they didn't take advantage of. A basket by Lloyd with 35 seconds left made it 69 - 62. This would be the closest JS would be for the 2nd half.
Persons was definitely the player of the game as he probably had around 20 to 25 points. Welch never found his stroke, but I can see why he has had a successful start to his HS career as a freshman. He does have a nice looking shot and he moves well on the court. He has nice vision and made some nice passes. Pembroke's 6'3 freshman Kafani Williams impressed me with the offensive rebounding he did. He didn't have confidence in his put back shot making ability off the offensive rebounds, but he is very valuable to the Spartans with his offensive "keep the ball alive" athleticism. Maher was a pleasure to watch. The point guard position isn't exactly over flowing with talent in NH this year, but Pembroke has a good one in the sophomore Maher. He is the straw that stirs the Spartan drink. I'm sure Coach Alosa thanks the basketball Gods he has this 5'8 sophomore for another 3 years. Pembroke impressed me with their spacing on offense. They are unselfish and are constantly looking to pass to find the open Spartan. They will be a tough team to contend with in D2.

Memorial won 50 - 31. So much for my daughter's 40 something to 30 something final score. When I told her Memorial scored 50 points she said, "Holy crap that's a lot of points." I guess I'll have to have a discussion with her on how high school basketball was played in the 70s and 80s.
Do you think she'll care ??

Concord over Pinky?? I would say they won the opening tap and hit the only shot of the game to win 2 - 0, but NHIAA says Concord 55 Pinky 47. If this is correct, then Pinky has just laid the biggest D1 egg so far this season.

Sophomore Mabor Gabriel had a huge game for the Pioneers against Merrimack with 23 points. Lauderdale had an armful of rebounds and Zach Stevens hit a few 3's to open up the middle for the Pioneer Bigs.

I would like to know the last time the Central girl's team had to wait until the following year of a season to garner their first official victory?
