Two Sport Athlete Empty Two Sport Athlete

Post  chicagokid43 on Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:29 pm

Well there is a two sport athlete in the state named Mike Mitchell. Mitchell has decided to go back to playing soccer this year for Milford. Last year Milford was 1-17. Not sure what the draw is but if he gets hurt I will take his cell phone, car and allowance away. lol

Two Sport Athlete Empty Re: Two Sport Athlete

Soccer is a great sport to play if you're a basketball player. One...you stay conditioned. Two, it has many of the same fundamentals such as moving without the ball, keeping your head up while 'dribbling", seeing the field/court, positioning, passing lanes....the list goes on.

While the scoring is so much different, and the methods to score (hands vs. feet) are very different, I think for a basketball player looking to stay in shape, and keep that competitive edge, soccer is a great sport for that.

He could always be a goalie...and there's more to life than just HS basketball...trust me I thought I was going to be playing for Dean Smith at UNC and the Chicago Bulls at one point. Then Smith retired when I was 17 and Jordan not much longer after that and my drive just died...otherwise I'm sure I'd be collecting a big check in this crazy NBA offseason right now.

Playing multiple sports in HS and creating friendships with kids who didn't play hoops and having the opportunity to be competitive is one thing I'm glad I didn't pass up on. I know its hard these days with all the camps, travel teams and leagues throughout the year for kids to play multiple sports, but its worth it IMO and good for the kids.

And don't kid yourself, if he gets hurt I'm sure it'll be someone else's fault... tongue

Two Sport Athlete Empty Nope

Post  chicagokid43 on Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:56 am

Nope his fault for taking the risk. I do not want to predict anything but he will be a stud at soccer also. He was the middle schools leading scorer as a 7th grader and is very similar at soccer. He is a playmaker with field vision and skills. Will be fun to watch him I just hate the idea of him injured for hoops season. Especially with how last season ended.

Two Sport Athlete Empty HE Doesn't

Post  chicagokid43 on Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:12 pm

H e doesn't want to get in shape for hoops he wants to play soccer. He is very good and do not be shocked when he has a real good season although it will be with a weak team. I think he will do the same next year if he goes prep. The two schools he has visited so far were ok if he could or chose to do both.

Post  chicagokid43 on Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:36 pm

What do you mean? Higher % because he is playing soccer vs Cross Country? I do not think I understand.

Post  8992 on Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:46 pm

Twice you have stated that you get upset if he got hurt playing soccer? Didn't you or am misreading it?

Are you worried he will get hurt for hoops?

Two Sport Athlete Empty Sorry

Post  chicagokid43 on Wed Jul 21, 2010 11:28 pm

Sorry the percentage part through me. I tried but hard to tell a kid the kid no. If he is willing to risk it, I guess it is on him. I was saying that tongue and cheek if he gets hurt I will be upset for him but that has to be his choice.

yea...and he could get hurt riding his bike too...but you're not gonna stop him from doing that. There are not enough multiple sport athletes in NH in my opinion. It shocks me to see how many kids just focus on one sport - at the same time though there are teams and places for the kids to play year-round so I can see how it makes sense sometimes.

Two Sport Athlete Empty Update on Milfords winless season..

Post  chicagokid43 on Sat Sep 25, 2010 12:49 am

Update on Milfords winless season. It is over baby. Milford traveled to Pembroke today and in overtime upstet the Other Spartans 3-2. Mitchell tallied 2 more goals and is slowly getting his soccer skills back. Hopefully his basketball skills are not degrading to much during the process.
