D1 Girls Finals Tonight Empty D1 Girls Finals Tonight

Understandably, most NH HS hoop followers/fans follow the boys side of the game. It's fast; it's athletic; you see some spectacular plays.
Girls hoops in NH does not boast anywhere near the number of strong players; most teams have two or three difference makers. Tonight's opponents are the exception to the rule.
Bedford has a deep, talented squad. They start five juniors who have been playing together since third grade. Brown, Collins, Glennon and Driscoll can and will all play in college. Tremendous athletes, defenders, shooters; tenacious workers. Off the bench you have McGown (the toughest rebounder in NH), Purcell (a 5'3" sparkplug) and Tucci (should be starting, IMO). Add to this the fact that they are a confident bunch, and you have a dangerous group of players.
Bishop Guertin, on the other hand, knows how to win. They did it last year and are looking to repeat. They have a coach who expects them to win, pushes them to win, shows them how to win, and makes sure they all know that he shares their passion and love of the game. They are not girls to him: they are athletes.
Guertin starts five players who will go on to play in college. Presumed Gatorade POY leader Green is headed to Boston University. She is the best player in the state - hands down. An inside and outside scoring threat and a voracious rebounder. Sherburne is the best PG in the state - has verballed to Niagara. Handles like a pro; shoots, drives, dishes and typically draws the opponents best guard to defend. Hayner is the purest shooter in the state, and will most likely prep next year in preparation for a D1 scholly. Gibbs will be playing for Catholic U in DC; a team that is ranked in the Top 10 of D3 women's programs in the country. Selfless player who can hit the three and gets as much pleasure out of an assist as a hoop. Kerutis is a bulldog (small b!) - pure and simple. Has taken double digit charges this year and defends so closely she knows what her opponent had for breakfast - yesterday. Off the bench you have Parkinson, who is the team's second leading rebounder and a strong scorer in her own right.
Two great subplots: 1. Guertin's Green, Hayner and Gibbs are all from Bedford. The Bedford players are their neighbors, friends and former middle school teammates. 2. Most of Bedford's players play for the NE Crusaders AAU program. Most of the BG players play for the NH Rivals.
These are two teams that make you forget that you are watching a girls game. Fundamentally sound; athletically strong; high basketball IQs; play hard all the time. Both teams like to run. No weak links. If you're going to catch ANY girls games ever, this should be the one you go to. Do yourself a favor and be there!

Bedford 39 BG 38

One of the best girl's D1/Class L Championship games I've ever seen. Bedford's Haley Driscoll received a nice feed from McKenzie Brown and slashed to the hoop and laid it in with 6 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 39 to 38 lead. Jamie Sherburne then went the length of the court and put up a shot just under the FT line which was blocked by Driscoll at the buzzer. Bedford lead for 6 seconds of this game..... The last 6 seconds.

Bedford's leading scorer was freshman Nicole Tucci with 9 points. Haley Driscoll added 8.

Meghan Green, Nicole Hayner and Jamie Sherburne each finished with 10 points.

Both teams left a lot of points at the FT line. BG was 8 - 16. Bedford was 9 - 22.

With 5:21 left in the game a huge play happened. Hayner received her 5th foul as she tripped Ali Glennon. She went to the FT line and made 1 of 2. As Glennon came back on defense she collapsed on the court in pain with her knee from the trip. Both teams lost a key player for the rest of the game.

Foul trouble and fouling out was key in this game. McKenzie Brown was in foul trouble the whole game. Hayner and Kerutis fouled out for BG within a minute and a half in the middle of the 4th quarter

In Bedford's first year of playing D1 they win the title against the defending state champion BG. Bedford started 5 juniors in this game and their 1st 2 players off the bench are freshman. Can you say Bulldog repeat for 2014?

Both teams played like a champion tonight. BG defended their title in a very noble fashion. This game lived up to the hype and was a fantastic game.
