That would be an epic one. How many teams in NH play each other THREE times in a season? Very rare.

We don't have to worry about that happening - Londonderry knocked off Winnacunnett 51-42 tonight.

D1 Girl's Semifinals tonight Empty D1 Girls BG vs. Londonderry Saturday

Post  NHRamFan on Thu Mar 08, 2012 12:12 am

BG over Memorial 49-45 in OT. I'm willing to bet Coach Quirk wishes he had some time outs left at the end of the game....
Sets up an interesting BG vs Londonderry rematch on Saturday. Londonderry was extremely flat in their first meeting against BG early in the season which ended with BG winning handily. Londonderry played extremely well in their win over Winnacunnet tonight. They are big, fast, aggressive and can shoot.
Two heavyweights going at it on the floor. Meanwhile, the coaching matchup pits the legend (Fagula) vs. the rookie (Hazelton). Will we be watching a changing of the guard?

Missed/made free throws played a big part of each one of the semi finals tonight.

Winny missed a truck load of free throws in the 2nd half that cost them. Londonderry must have out scored Winny by at least 10 to 12 points from the FT line.

Memorial missed 2 big Fts towards the end of regulation with the score tied at 40.

Londonderry looked fast and physical tonight. They played with a hunger in their eyes. It should be a great championship on Saturday.

It was quite a toxic basketball mix for Winny last night:

1) Turnovers
2) Missed FTs
3) Cold from 3 point land

These 3 things spelled the end of their run for championships. What a run it was. The great thing about their run is they cultivated it through their town and within their system. I don't believe I heard the words recruiting or transfers used to describe their 5 year run of titles. This is not a criticism of other programs, rather it is solid praise for the job Ed Beattie did over the last 5 years in bringing the Winny program to a higher level in Class L/D1 girl's basketball.

With Winny graduating 3 starters it seems their chances of capturing a crown next season will be even slimmer than this season. BG and Londonderry will be playing for the "changing of the guard" championship this Saturday at 7:30 pm at SNHU. These 2 teams will be returning 9 of their 10 starters for next season.

One would think the 2012 Championship game will also be a preview of the 2013 Championship game.
