John Wickey - Babson Beavers Empty Re: John Wickey - Babson Beavers

From the Union Leader on December 17, 2012
NH College Notebook by Eric Emmerling

This season, opponents have experienced difficulty defending Babson sophomore John Wickey.
After spending the summer fine tuning his outside shot the Manchester Central graduate has become lethal from anywhere on the offensive end of the court, banging down treys with precision and banking two-pointers on post moves to secure the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week honors two weeks in a row. The 6-foot-7 center, named to the 2011 New Hampshire Union Leader All-State basketball team, earned Player of the Week honors for the first week in December after scoring 19 points - going 4-for-7 from 3-point land - and grabbing 11 rebounds during the Beavers (6-3) upset win at Amherst, ranked 10th nationally. The week prior, Wickey averaged a double-double (22.3 points, 11.3 rebounds) while winning three games in four nights. In this stretch he hit 57.1 percent of his field goal attempts and knocked down 13-of-17 free throws en route to collecting his first-ever Player of the Week honor. Wickey's long-distance shooting range wreaks havoc with defenses, particularly as he is also adept at muscling free for points in the paint as well as dishing the ball to open teammates. Wickey, who averaged five points and four rebounds while starting every game as a freshman, leads most every Babson statistical category this season. He's averaging 19.8 points and 9.2 boards through nine games, while shooting 54 percent from the field and 52 percent from beyond the 3-point line. "He's a humble warrior, a high-character guy with a high basketball IQ that wants to compete and improve," said Babson coach Stephen Brennan. "He worked hard on his shooting technique over the off-season and is now capable of dominating down low one night and then shooting threes another, depending on the situation." "Coach saw something in my follow through and I spent the summer working on making the adjustment," said Wickey who sank 13-of-45 3-pointers as a freshman. "It's amazing how one small adjustment can make such a big difference in my game. I'm on a streak now, hitting a lot of outside shots." In two games this season, Wickey hit every trey attempt hoisted up and went 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 from downtown in two other contests. Babson concludes its fall semester schedule today, hosting Becker College.
"He's having a breakout season and opposing defenses are going to make some adjustments in an attempt to cut down his efficiency. John may see some double teams and have a smaller guy chasing after him on the perimeter," said Brennan. "We can counter any adjustments defenses make. The key, for me, is to not get frustrated and take what's available," said Wickey. "If I draw extra attention other teammates should be open and everyone is capable of hitting 3-pointers."
