LOWELL -- UMass Lowell Police are asking for the public's help with identifying a man who threw a bottle at a referee and then punched the referee in the chest before fleeing during a youth basketball game yesterday afternoon.

Officers were called to the UMass Lowell Campus Recreation Center at Aiken and Pawtucket streets at about 4 p.m., after the referee called police, according to Officer Peter Morelli.

Morelli said some fans were upset about calls made by the referee during a game being played by 7th graders from Lowell and Portsmouth, N.H., as part of the Fundamental Hoops Basketball Tournament.

Morelli said a man in the stands made an obscene gesture at a referee and was told to leave the gym. That man then assaulted the referee with a water bottle, prompting the referee to go in to the lobby to call police.

"The suspect met the referee in the lobby and punched him in the chest, knocking him to the ground," Morelli said.

The referee was "shaken up" but was not taken to the hospital. The suspect fled.

"Obviously, we're looking to identify that person," Morelli said.

The Amateur Athletic Union tournament was not affiliated with any local schools, but was using UMass Lowell's facility. The tournament includes 193 teams and students in grades 5 through 8, according to the Fundamental Hoops website.

The president of Fundamental Hoops did not return a call seeking comment last night.

Morelli said the parent is described as

a black male, 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, and about 220 pounds. He wore a green sweatshirt, dark sweatpants, and a Red Sox baseball hat.

"We believe he is either a parent or a relative of a player," Morelli said. "No one has come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call UMass Lowell Police at 978-934-2398.

Just more parents being idiots. Going to HS and younger sporting events is actually humorous. Remember the days when parents were seen at sports and not heard? If you were a good athlete mom and dad didn't need to yell at officials or opposing players, they let their sons or daughters good play, be the ultimate voice. Now a days parents are over-the-top with sports. The loudest parents can be of the star athlete. They don't just sit back and watch, no they have to be loud and boisterous. I have seen first hand parents getting kicked out of Gyms and stadiums, really a sad mark on society.
Don't get me wrong, coaches are just as bad now a days. I saw a coach at a tournament yelling at the official scorer about a a foul situation. Instead of walking over to the table, the coach yelled from his bench. Now I understand the heat of the moment, but remember coaches and parents, these people are not paid.
I have also seen fights on both fields and courts, should we be surprised that the kids act just like mommy and daddy?
I have finished my suspension for PED's, no not Performance Enhancing Drugs, but Poster Enhancing Drugs.

NH ref assaulted in game. Empty Miami Heat and Society

Post  clippafan23 Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:29 pm

This was not about sports it was about a bad person who obviously made a bad decision. We see it every day in society and sports just mimics that. The less actual quality of life you have the more likely you are to take sports way to seriously. It is the mirror of society.
I also think the taunting, self promoting athletes of today that are not happy with winning and need to embarrass and humiliate their competitor to build themselves into a hero. Last night watching the Miami heat do superman poses to the Bobcats fans after a great game was another sign of how sad what we see daily can be. Here it is a millionaire making a 8 footer to win a game is not happy enough about the win he has to taunt and rub in it the fans face. Winning is not longer enough.. Now we have to detroy or humiliate to be satisfied and that is just sad to me.

Not sure where you got the this isn't about sports, I read that it happened at a basketball game, not in the local library. I would bet this parent or relative would not throw a water bottle or punch the librarian.
As far as society goes, while to a certain extent I agree, but at the same time, just because some of society acts like idiots doesn't mean everyone does.
As far as the Miami Heat go, the NBA is the worst of all sports. I watch most games, and they are all punks. From my favorite team the Boston Celtics, KG great player, jerk on the court. Paul Pierce another idiot, fakes injuries, gets stabbed. Most of society is not getting in the trouble that the NBA or any sports league deals with.
Society is a loose term, 90% of society is not breaking the law. The derelicts of society do these things, it is far from the norm.
I also agree with something Charles Barkley said years ago, "I am not a role model". The only role models kids should have are coaches, teachers, and their parents. No professional athlete should be a role model, it is not up to pro athletes to teach your children right from wrong, IT IS A PARENTS JOB!!!
Not to mention blaming it on society is an excuse.

NH ref assaulted in game. Empty Riots for Shoes,Youtube fights and shootings

Post  clippafan23 Fri Dec 30, 2011 12:29 am

The fact that it happened at a sporting event does not make it about sports in my eyes. The person that did this is just as capable of hitting a teacher for giving a bad grade or another driver for cutting them off on the highway. Society is full of nuts and when one spews over into athletics we should recognize that the person did it and not the sport.
I agree with your diagnoses of the NBA however aren't we all role models? I mean the more often our kids see or hear things like this going on the harder it is to explain to them why it is wrong. We do get used to what we see and accept it as the norm... I understand that as a parent we teach and guide but we also have to understand many kids these days are burdoned with split households and parents working two and three jobs to survive. So if we can correct what they see on tv,online and the day to day ignorance we are giving them a better shot at avoiding being that next numbscull.
