Floras back in town

Post  GNG on Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:29 am

Jeremy reports it today. I knew 2 weeks back, one of my many rumors I got on my birthday.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the nhiaa. Kids going back and forth from prep schools to high schools in the same semester could open up some very interesting loopholes. Eligiblity, and so forth.

If a source next to Floras leaked it to Jeremy they must have cleared it up with the nhiaa.

Yea, GNG. It's funny, but we knew a couple of weeks back and there's always that running current by some people that say:

"Wait until it breaks in MAINSTREAM media before we report it here on the Forum"

One question. In 2011 what exactly is MAINSTREAM media?

Didn't the Telegraph just report this week that JFK was shot in Dallas? MAINSTREAM media is so far behind the actual news sometimes that when I get today's paper I feel like it was last week's paper.

It should be interesting to see how the Floras situation pans out for his eligibility for this upcoming season. My sources tell me it is totally up in the air. With the season around the corner I'm sure there will be a lot of last minute meetings, paper work and checking of by-laws and school policies. If he does play for Merrimack I can't tell if it's a good dynamic for Merry or the other way. I think about the season Tyler Gendron and the other Merry players would've had without Floras. Add Floras to the mix and the dynamic changes. Floras becomes the center of attention offensively again and one could argue it could go both ways for the Merrimack team karma.

Wow Merrimack

Post  boxout on Wed Nov 23, 2011 1:59 pm

I can't think of one reason why the NHIAA would or should let him play. He made a choice to leave Merrimack and go to Kimball U. I have this gut feeling that Floras went through some early season practices or team oriented activities and realized he would not start, and may not see much playing time. Kimball is loaded at the guard position and the 3.
I wonder if he reclassified to play at Kimball, if so does that mean he now declassifies? I wonder how his grades went at Kimball? Is he currently attending Merrimack? Like today, or this past week?
You also have to question whether there was some trouble at Kimball. Not saying there was, but kids will be kids.
I know that many Private schools have started their seasons and some started two weeks ago, games. So if he played one practice, he should not be allowed to play NHIAA. I maybe harsh, but it is time to hold children accountable for their actions, especially kids that are over 17 and approaching 18, or is he 18? Obviously he went to Kimball to play basketball, not for an education. The education aspect has clearly not changed at Kimball, but I am sure the basketball aspect for this player has.

I agree he as no business playing this year, what classes was he taking at Kimball? most likely he was taking A sophomore English class since he reclassified now he comes into Merrimack at the end of the Quarter and he is taking junior English. This is jut one example maybe not but all this stuff should be worked out before he plays. Academics come first.

Set rules?

Post  basketballtime on Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:37 pm

Does the NHIAA have set rules in place and if so where in the rule book are they? If not it's a choice that will be made by the NHIAA? Does anyone know which one it is???

NHIAA Protecting Your High School Eligibilty

Post  bb603 on Wed Nov 23, 2011 10:30 pm

5. TRANSFER STUDENTS
If you transfer to a school because of a
move into the school district by your
parents/guardians, you will be immediately
eligible for participation if all other
requirements are met. If you transfer
without a parent/guardian move, you are
ineligible to participate for 365 days unless
a Transfer Rule Affidavit has been filed and
the Executive Director has issued a ruling.
This includes students who transfer from a
non-member school (i.e. prep school, etc.)
back to your school and those students who
change schools as a result of a change in
guardianship (i.e. move to live with a
different parent/guardian without
parent/guardian changing residence).

Does not define what you need to get a Transfer Rule Affidavit.

TRANSFER RULE AFFIDAVIT

The form requires the parents and students to sign stating that:

We certify the purpose of this transfer does not include participation in interscholastic athletics. Furthermore, no student, parent, teacher, or coach made
contact (either written or oral) prior to the transfer for the purpose of persuading the transfer for participation in athletics.

TO BE COMPLETED BY RECEIVING SCHOOL
Our school has reviewed the transfer and certifies that (1) the purpose of the transfer was not made to include participation in athletics within the
definition of Section 5: Transfer Rule, and (2) there has been no recruitment of this student by anyone connected with our school and our athletic
program.

This statement needs to be signed by the principal, the AD and the coach.

TO BE COMPLETED BY SENDING SCHOOL
(Student’s Name): has not transferred from our high school to
(Receiving School): High School for the purpose of participation
in interscholastic athletics and, to the best of our school’s knowledge there has been no recruitment of this student by anyone connected with the
receiving school or its athletic program.

This statement needs the signature of the principal and the AD.

I have a feeling there will be an affadavit filed with a subsequent ruling. Lot of Tomohawk Turkey is going to be talked about this weekend with paper work flying next week.

I will say this. You had the Majong situation last year at Trinity which was real interesting before the start of the season. It didn't look good for Majong to play last season. Feathers flew, so to speak and Majong was eligible. Will Floras be eligible for this season? I can't say, but there will be a lot of "feathers flying" in Merrimack next week.

Knowledge

Post  basketballtime on Wed Nov 23, 2011 10:56 pm

Thanks for the info, however i can only imagine his parents know all this right? His mother i believe works in the Merrimack School district and should have plenty of knowledge of the rules.

Majong situation was very different - actually.

Athletic reclassification is a non-issue as public schools don't do it. You have 4 years in which to play after you leave middle/jr high school.

The academic issue is intriguing but might be even more troublesome, if he ever chooses to go to college post HS.

Tully weighing in. Love it. I know Majong situation was different, but it's always interesting when "feathers are flying."

It's a weird situation that I don't think will be in a rule book.

If his academic grades meet the criteria (4 passing units) then he might be okay.
The tricky part is the fact that it might be 10th grade Math - which he might have already received credit for.

Now, does Merry accept those and factor in his grades for the quarter? If they meet the academic standards - I say yes - but I'm not sure they do.
They might be perfectly acceptable as some schools do courses in different sequences.
I think Merrimack has a lot of wiggle room.
I also think Merrimack the district has high academic standards.

Now - here's a spoiler - if they decide his 1st quarter doesn't count at all - because it's repeat courses - do they then make his last quarter's academic work (4th quarter last year) his grades to determine eligibilty?

Regardless - this quarter taken in sophomore academics could pass by now but - I would bet quite a bit - will cause a very messy situation with NCAA clearinghouse when he goes to college.

I feel an NHIAA appeal has to be in order here.

I think so -

now or later -

Of course - they could have explored this with the NHIAA a few weeks ago and found a much easier solution than we are seeing.

Good point Tully. You have to think the Floras family explored the options before finalizing the transfer. Does anybody truly think Floras would go the season without playing any competitive basketball?

Apple pie? Safe choice, but understandable. We tend to be more liberal with our pie choices in T & F Land. The choice tomorrow:

Banana cream pie from the Red Arrow

I would think the only question would be academic eligibility as *junior* at Merrimack.... If he's been taking sophomore classes this year so far, then he has some catching up to do in order to be academically "with" his class. This whole issue is very odd - I'm not sure I want to know any of the details - it's a family choice and leave it at that. His college options certainly are changed by this choice as he's now thrown back into a different mix of kids, unless he decides to do a PG year.

I cannot imagine the transfer rule comes into effect since he was at Merrimack. I think the "spirit" of the transfer rule deals more with leaving or going to a school to only better your athletic chances after having already played varsity elsewhere. I doubt very much KUA cares about the competitive balance of NH D1 hoops. If it was a kid leaving BG to go back to Merri because they didn't like Jimmy (personality or playtime) or they knew Floras was returning and wanted to be sure to get on the team, then perhaps the "from" school could be vindictive and not give the release... I seem to remember a Alvirne & BG having this issue a couple of years ago in football, but the details are fuzzy (and I think the issues weren't athletic ability).
