Coach Painter said nothing about it at practice.

I have messages out to as many coaches as I know, hopefully I get something back soon. If anyone hears post it here. I would be curious as to what teams we would come up with compared to the actual teams? (Ok, ok, we know the BG "lovefest" crew would have a majority of the Varsity and some of the Junior Varisity on the first team, but what about the rest of the state??)

BG "lovefest" crew
nhball9

Sounds like a group of people that would've travelled to Max Yasgur's farm in Woodstock in the Summer of 69 to listen to The Who, Janis Joplin, Country Joe Mcdonald and Jimi Hendrix.

You say you don't remember Country Joe and his band Country Joe & The Fish:

"One, two, three, what are we fighting four.
C'mon I don't give a damn. The next stop is Vietnam."

I tried to come up with a lineup, just don't know enough kids from other teams. That's why I like this forum it gives people exposure to kids from other teams. Granted it tends to be mostly BG, North, and Memorial people that are talking about their teams. I learned alot about North from reading what nyk wrote, so much so that I went to a few of their games to see if they were as good as advertised. They were. BB603 has also filled us in nicely about Memorial's team.

I truly believe that the Guertin kids could care less about all state. There are five kids on this team that has a rare opportunity of getting the TRIPLE CROWN. Three state championships in one season. I realize it's a longshot, but with the field being so wide open I am sure Coach Painter is comforted by the fact that these kids are used to winning come playoff time.

T@F your our NH High School sports historian. When was the last time a school won 3 state championships in the same year? It seems to me Memorial in the early seventies, or Nashua when they were one school. I am talking hoops, football, and baseball.

I wasn't trying to say being on the all-state team is the end-all-be-all, just that it is an honor as the team is created by the division 1 coaches. People who are MUCH more qualified to make those decisions than we are!
I will get the ball rolling:
I would place Turner, Breen, Tref, Poore, Damon, Gilcrest, Feeney, Sewards, Kinnon, Dionne, Tiernan on first team. Those seem to me to be no-brainers.

If BG wins the title then I suggest they hold a huge tailgate named "BG Lovefest"...

I will make that suggestion and we will invite you nhball9. I only recognize half the names on your list. Is the catcher from Salem on it? I would add Joe McCarthy to the list. I believe he leads the team in average, rbis, home runs. He also leads the team in wins. I want to say he has 6 dingers and there is not a cheapy in the bunch. The left fielder from Exeter is a junior who threw a no hitter, he bats cleanup, from what I gather he is quite a player.

Dupont from Merrimack should be on the list.

NHIAA is such a wealth of historical information that it is impossible to look up such things Razz

So, given the some what power of my memory the best I could come up with are the following:

1970 and 1971 - Memorial. They definitely won back to back basketball titles during these 2 years. They had super football teams which either won the title or were runner ups with Bob Chabot at the coaching helm. They had to have won the baseball title at least one if not both of those years when you figure they had Ron Beauravage, Scott Thompson and future Cy Young winner, Mike Flanagan, anchoring the pitching staff. I won't say it's a lock, but in either 70 or 71 Memorial might have won the Big 3 of state sport's titles.

Central came close near the end of Fitz's coaching stint and the start of Wheeler's. They both won state titles in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006. During this time Central was dominating D1 in football with Schubert coaching and they won a few state titles. The baseball teams were good, but I don't think they came away with any state titles during this time.

When Concord won the 3 state basketball titles in a row with Bonner from 1997 to 1999 they were very good in football back then and might have secured a state title in football. They also had very good baseball teams during that time and might have come close to winning one or could've won one title.

I wish I had more concrete information, but when I knocked on NHIAA's internet home, no one answered and the lights were totally dark with their historical information. Very Happy

Your best bet for Historical information is actually the New Hampshire HS Baseball Coaches Association. They do a pretty good job with their website, as compared to the Basketball Coaches Association which is barely considered a working website.

Here's a link with teams back to 2006. Not really all that historical, but it's something. Scroll to the bottom for past years in PDF. I'm not sure if it's b/c that when the NHHSBCA started being involved in the process, or they are only records to 2006 (would seem odd) - but this is what they have.

We have a state where Fritz Weartherbee can tell us the history of a person, store or town from the 1800s, but we can't find accurate information on HS sports teams from the 1970s to 1990s. Go figure.

The records and statistics are somewhere - in a file cabinet collecting dust. It's a matter of the NHIAA or one of these associations getting an intern to go through everything and get it online where it can be shared.

Can you just picture the lunch room at NHIAA? I'm sure they have a toaster oven instead of a microwave. During lunch they listen to vinyl on an Onkyo turntable and watch TV on a 19 inch black and white Zenith tv with turn knobs.

Come to think of it, no wonder score updates and rescheduling updates are so lacking on the NHIAA web site:

1) It takes much longer to cook pizza in a toaster oven than in a microwave (I hated that when I was a kid to see the side of a frozen pizza box that said: DO NOT MICROWAVE).

2) They are constantly cleaning the stylus of the turn table needle to listen to their record albums.

3) They are adjusting the rabbit ears on the Zenith tv to get weather updates at noon on Ch 9 so they know if games can be played that afternoon or evening.

Now, we know why the NHIAA web site is so informationally challenged. Razz

I agree for the most part about the coaches comment; however, ask a few players too. Which pitcher do you not want to face, which gives you the toughest AB. Conversely for the pitcher which players are the toughest outs. Let's not forget about fielders! Sure the 88 MPH fastball can get a lot of hitters out, but some still hit the ball and we need qualified fielders! My one "comment" about "some" coaches is they are head over heels infatuated with their player and don't seem to always consider the accomplishments of other players. Depending on "when" you see an opponent means you may or may not see the best pitcher - does that make the hitters look better? Always a lot of controversy over "who" makes the last and who misses out. I don't put a whole lot of stock in these lists because I think some coaches are better at convincing other coaches who the better players are. Talk to a few umpires - they'll tell you who the better pitchers and more importantly catchers are. They'll also provide feedback over sportsmanship of certain players.

Anyway, perhaps it'll be easier to associate position and school with the player - I think the following are correct. It's just a start using nhball9's list. I'm terrible with names. Most of the names have been mentioned along the way here. Given time I might remember a few more!

North: Turner - P/OF, Breen - 1B, Mellin - P, Karkhanis - SS
Salem: Tref - C, Poore - P, Peters - P/?, Morin - P/?
Merrimack: Damon - P, Parker - 3B, ?? - LF
BG: Gilchrist - P/SS, Ferlan - P, McCarthy - P/DH, Clapp - RP
PA:
Concord: Dionne - P
Dover: Seawards, I - ?
South: Faso - P, Maloney, J - P
Central:
Londonderry: Kinnon - P/?, Maloney, R - P
Exeter:
Winnacunnet:
Timberlane:
Keene:
Memorial: Sullivan - P
Trinity: Beaudette - P
Alvirne: MacDonald - P, Teague - ?, Hurley - 1B
Spaulding:
West - Welch - P

Not sure where Feeney or Tiernan were from. There's a Ryan Feeney that's listed from the NHHSBCA website from Pinkerton...

As much as I agree that Poore is a great player, he hasn't played a whole lot this year, right? So is that a selection based on history? For me that's a 50/50. I'm fine with him being there, but you may find some that think otherwise.

Same thing happened with Jake Nelson in basketball from South 2 seasons ago. He was consensus 1st team pre season and then injured himself early. Some people thought he should have been put on HM All State because of his body of play from the previous 3 seasons.

If it's up to me I probably don't vote a player on an AS team who didn't play 50 to 99% of the season. That spot should be given to a player that busted butt for the whole season and was very productive.

I agree about multiple sources of confirmation on the talent of a kid. That being said the all state meeting is about all the coaches getting together to hash out the best representation of the division. From what I can gather there is quite a bit of debate. So, while I agree that there are coaches (and fans) that get a little too infatuated with their players, overall the teams are a representation of what the coaches agree to as a whole. I'd pay money to watch that meeting on tv (yes, I have no life).

I heard the football meetings can also get pretty nasty. I would think baseball is the hardest because there is very little film for coaches to view. In football coaches are always using film to scout their opponents. Same in hoop, and with websites like Jeremy's where one can go to watch games , you get to know these kids. Baseball, very little if any video available, very little if any newspaper coverage. I bet that would be a fun meeting to watch. I also have no life.

Nope - not me... Too many other things that are too important. I don't too wrapped up in any of these "lists" - there are politics involved in a bit of it. Yes, they generally get the top players, but there's always a few head scratchers! Just like when your child made or didn't make some all star or travel team and you "self compared" to some other child who did... My oldest son once wasn't nominated for an academic related sports award, although another player with a much lower GPA was. For us that was a head scratcher, but we also understood why the other child was nominated...

BG has

Cody Gilchrist: P (1st team)
Christian Ferlan: P (2nd team)
Alan McQuarrie: C (2nd team)

Coach said he tried to get Christian on 1st team... I'm happy for him - it's an accomplishment he made through hard work. I'm quite sure there's quite a few batters that don't want to see his curve or slider coming at them - say nothing of the 2 seamer riding into your hands. Can you say broken wood bat!

I got the d1 all state teams from my friend, but he asked me not to post it until later this week so coaches can have the chance to tell their players. I will say it is not what we thought.
