ATHLETES' FOOT* notes Sports Shorts
Longtime forum members will get a hoot out of this one. Brian Goodridge is best friends with both my boys. He is playing rugby {the perfect sport for him} at Salve Regina. When I informed him that I used to play rugby back in the day, he did not believe me. So off to the scrapbooks {my mom god love her saved everything}, I remembered one photo in particular where the caption stated "escaped convicts or St Anselm's rugby players", so anyway I am looking thru all my old crap and lo and behold what do I find{ this is where the story gets good}
A sports column written in the college newspaper by our own INTREPID COLUMNIST T@F. The name of his column was what I put in the above box. Here are some of his excerpts from 1979.
6' 11" junior, Pat Ewing, of Cambridge, Mass, will be the most sought after high school player in the country next year. I have seen him play at the last two Boston shootouts and he has outplayed almost every center he has played against.
The word out of Southbend is that Dan Devine might become the A.D. at N.D... Prime candidates for his head coaching job are Don Shula, Lee Corso, Lou Holtz, and Joe Yonto, who is the present defensive coordinator at N.D.
THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEPARTMENT: Woody Hayes coaching at B.C... Woody Hayes in the boxing ring...Bear Bryant wearing a different hat...Lloyd Free making a pass... A playoff system in college football...The Red Sox with a decent pitching staff... Reggie Jackson endorsing a septic tank cleaning service...Larry Bird and Magic Johnson on the same team..Howard Cosell playing any sport... Bill Lee become an astronaut.
Like I said God bless my mom for saving these first wrtiten words by the man we call TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS or T@f for short. Priceless...

Wow, turn about is fair play. A little over a year ago I shocked the BG basketball community with GNG's HS senior year book.

The Athlete's Foot brings back good memories and signs of things to come from 1979:
Woody Hayes in the boxing ring - A few months before Woody sadly lost it and punched a Clemson linebacker named Bauman near the end of the 1978 Gator Bowl. What's amazing is Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian, the ABC announcers, had no idea it happened. It shows you how far TV broadcasts have come. If that hppened now it would be captured in full HD from 5 different angles. Incredibly, Hayes finishes coaching out the last 2 minutes of the Gator Bowl AFTER punching Bauman and receives a 15 yard unsportsman penalty for going on the field to argue with an official. Sad end to a great football coaching career.
Bird and Magic on the same team - It would happen 13 years later with the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
Playoff system in college football - You have to laugh. College football fans were clamoring for it in 1979 and now 32 years later are still clamoring for it. A playoff system in college football will never happen.
The Boston Shootout - This was the PREMIER HS basketball tournament of it's day. AS teams from 8 different areas of the country came to the Case Center at BU for a Thursday to Saturday tournament. Most of the best players were there. Boston, NY, Chicago, LA and Atlanta were the 5 certain cities. They changed the other 3 city areas depending on talent from year to year. I saw Ewing play all of his 4 high school years. During that time it was said he was the next Bill Russell. I saw Sidney Lowe, point guard for Valvano's NC State Lorenzo Charles basket National Championship team. I saw Mark Aguirre. The best player I saw in the years I attended in the late 70s and early 80s: Pat Ewing. 2nd best would be Chris Mullin from the NY team. I was able to sit at press row with Lesley Visser and a guy named Steve {can't remember the last name - a guy who went on to be employed by the Celtics in public relations for years}. They told me to watch this kid named Mullin. You won't be wowed by his physical attributes, but watch how he plays the game. It was basketball science to watch Mullin play. The sweetest shot I've ever seen in basketball. The way he came off picks and the way he spotted up for his mid range jumper was basketball beauty. He helped lead NY to the shoot out title his senior year. A lot of these players went on to star in the just formed Big East conference. I was priviliged to see a lot of players before they became stars of the Big East and NBA.
The most amazing thing I ever saw in the years I went to the Boston Shoot Out: Chicago played an early evening game in the quarterfinals one year. There was talk their best player wouldn't make the game because of his HS graduation and it would severely handicap the Chicago team against Atlanta. Chicago was losing at halftime by about 20. As the teams warmed up at half time there was a buzz going around the Case Center Chicago's best player came in on a later flight and was now taking the floor to warm up for the 2nd half. He scored 20 plus in the 2nd half with numerous assists and steals and dominated Atlanta to lead Chicago to the come back victory. He went on to lead Chicago to the Shoot Out title and won the MVP award.
The Chicago's player's name: Doc Rivers

Re: ATHLETES' FOOT* notes Sports Shorts
Just thought about it. If I had to name my 1st team for the years I watched the Boston Shoot Out it would be:
Point guard - Sidney Lowe
Shooting guard - Doc Rivers
Small forward - Chris Mullin
Power forward - Terry Cummings
Center - Patrick Ewing
2 subs - Walter Berry and Mark Aguirre.
One could argue Aguirre was a better player than Cummings, but I'm looking for a symmetrical team. If I had Aguirre and Mullin on the starting team the start of the game would need 2 basketballs. Mullin would get along better with Aguirre than Aguirre getting along with Mullin. Mullin was a crafty passer and when he hit a few shots would always set up mates with his great court vision. Aguirre usually had one thing on his mind... to shoot.

Terry Cummings
Terry Cummings was one of my favorite college players. When he was at DePaul in Chicago they were the most followed team in that area. Tyrone Corbin and Terry Cummings were a huge part of my love for the game. When Mike went on his visit to Gordon I thought it was neat just to be talking to a guy who was on the same roster as Ty Corbin. Funny how players of an era take you to a time in your life. I stayed up many of nights watching DePaul play on WGN in Gary Indiana. Cool for sure.

One nice thing about Cummings is he played the game hard and with a quiet toughness. He dished out physical play and received it in the paint without doing what a lot of NBA players do incessantly today:
Whine, complain and cry like an unfed baby.
