BG makes up for last years loss to Londonderry. This is how we roll.

Post  GNG on Wed May 11, 2011 11:52 pm

Several BG parents were talking about how last year Londonderry did a suicide sqeeze to 10 run rule Guertin. With that fresh on several of the players minds BG dusted Londonderry 10-2. Londonderry actually led 2-0 after one inning. Christian Ferlan started on 15 minutes notice, and did a fantastic job after the first. Pat Clapp came on in the 5th and pitched 2 shutout innings. Bg must of had at least 12 hits, I know Jim Kelly had 3, McQuarrie had 2, Psycho had 3, and a bunch of kids had 1. BG played a clean game in the field, several nice plays to keep Londonderry at bay.
It was nice to have a game like this, just about all of BG games have been nailbiters, except when Winnie pasted them last week. On to Spaulding Thursday night for a tilt with the Red Raiders. 8-4 after 12 games, Coach Painter has done a hell of a job turning this program around in such a short time.

West waxes Winnie

Post  GNG on Thu May 12, 2011 7:26 am

14-12, maybe pitching depth is Winnie's weakness. I know the kid we saw was good.T@F have you looked at my sleeper team Pinkerton's record lately? I wonder if you sit home at night saying"How does he do it? Every sport he picks a sleeper team and they end up being real, real good".

Good for West - doesn't seem like it was a defensive night. This keeps the standings very interesting - 4 teams with 4 losses and 4 teams with 5 losses - all within the top 10 in the current standings

Who pitched for Londonderry? Kinnon or Maloney?? BG coaching it putting team in the right places at the right time to be a contender. Nice job. Is this the same coaching staff that 2 years ago a majority of the senior class quit the team??? I remember talking with BG parents about that.

Memorial - there's a surprise. Looks to be a young team and in rebuilding mode. Seen Sullivan pitch but didn't overly impress IMHO.

Ryan Maloney started then they went to #8 and #25 (not sure who they were). BG loaded the bases 3 times in the first 4 innings... I think the "theory" was to push the pitch counts up there. Ryan seemed to be able to throw 2 quick strikes, but then tried to nibble and dabble which in the long run got hit pitch count "up there". From where we stood along the 1b-line both pitchers had to fit the ball into interesting spaces. Londonderry has a lefty catcher which probably made it a bit tougher to pick up that outside corner for the righty batters (which we're loaded with). I noted pretty quickly that based on glove position on catch generally resulted in whether pitch was ball or strike (with a few exceptions once the score opened up a bit). Christian threw 86 in his 5 1/3 which is his normal 7 inning count, so it went both ways. Both sides had times where they wished they got a called strike or two.

Memorial and Sullivan were not on yesterday. Not sure what went wrong with the team this year. Of the 9 games thet have lost pitching has only been the problem in 3 games, Concord, Merrimack and Salem.

They could have beat Trinity, but the 3rd baseman and the shortstop each threw away 3 easy outs. There was one earned run in the game. They threw away the Spaulding game with 6 errors in the 4th. They threw it away against Exeter with 3 errors in one inning, the first error would have been the second out of a double play to end the inning.

Memeorial needs to play clean defensively to stay in games and they haven't been able to do it consistently.

They currently seem to have a revolving selection of players at 3rd and short.

Does anyone know if the Keene @ Trinity game ever finished. News9 sports report says it was in the 15th inning tied at 3!

Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my belief that if Guertin wins 2 more games they will secure a 1st round home playoff game at Holman. Win that game and the next 2 rounds are at Holman regardless. That is a huge unexpected bonus, getting to play those games on a field that you are very familar with.

Nashua Teams Playing Well Thus Far

Post  nyk on Thu May 12, 2011 11:32 am

Nashua teams are had success this week against Londonderry. North won convincingly earlier on Monday and BG last night. I stayed to watch the BG game and it did look like a laser show in favor of BG.

North played Spaulding in the 4 p.m. matinee and won 11-1 in 5 innings. Sophomore Kyle McCarthy pitched all 5 innings allowing one unearned run in the top of the 5th. I think every North hitter picked up a base hit yesterday. McCarthy's performance was critical as North still has two games left this week (Dover today and Concord on Friday) and his performance kept the other pitchers' innings in check. I was concerned about the a 5-game week and being down a starter (Jake Mellin), but the boys have played really well thus far. The run support has been outstanding and it definitely makes a difference in the pitcher's approach to opposing batters. Our coached subbed early yesterday to give the starters some rest. They'll need that rest when facing Dover & Concord.

Spaulding is in tough shape because of the dismissal of so many seniors. I'm sure they would have been more competitive with those kids on the team. They were a good playoff team last year.

Plus don't forget that the semis are held at Holman too, so you could be looking at 3 home playoff games.

The one thing I'm not crazy about regarding the playoff format is the single-elimination setup. It would be interesting to have the semis and finals setup as a best of 3 series. I think this would send the two most complete teams to the finals and once there, the best team would win.

Agreed. Baseball is the one sport in NH where the best team doesn't always win. It is not uncommon to see one teams third best pitcher facing another teams second best pitcher in the finals.
NYK , your team has really responded after the South loss, congcrats. I was going to tell when it happened that loss to South was probably a good thing{ cuz it gets the bullseye of an undefeated season off your back}, but I didn't because nobody likes to hear that. North seems to be playing great ball right now at the right time of the season. I am dreading the ride to Rochester today, but their are only so many games left to watch my boy play.

There's 4 rounds of playoffs - the first two are home field (Thu 6/2 && Sat 6/4 - both at 4pm), the semis are Holman (either Thu 6/9 or Fri 6/10 at 4PM), and the Finals are F'Cat Stadium (Sat 6/18 at 4PM - 1 week after the semis - which is insane, but this is the NHIAA where illogical decisions rule).

Quite frankly nothing is guaranteed with the crazy point system in place. Although I tend to agree 2 more wins, especially on the road, and preferably against teams that also have 4 or 5 losses (eg, Concord, Pinkerton, Exeter) will certainly help secure the 1st game at home. Being top 4 and winning the first one means 3 games at comfy and spaaacious Holman. Of course the way the season's going with the equality and ability for 1 pitcher to win a game, being top 8 doesn't mean much. I suspect there will be more than 1 upset in the first round.

BG - Sunday June 5th 2PM in the Fieldhouse

The one thing that concerns me about the schedule - Friday is the Baccalaureate Dinner following which is the Senior Flight Night. This is the night where they have the Seniors stay overnight at BG with "safe" activities all night. One of those events all seniors should attend, but playing a baseball game the following day could be a problem. Of course this group of kids is resilient - remember they spent a day in Boston on a scavenger hunt and still played a basketball playoff game that evening after another bus ride to Durham...

Always something. Well they gotta get there first, but that does bite. All the seniors look forward to that night, can't deny my kid that one.

Thanks. I wasn't sure what to expect after the loss to South, but it does seem to have refocused them. Still two more tough games to get through this week. Our Dover game will resume from where it left off: Karkhanis on 1st with one out and Breen at the plate, top of the 1st. So at least we're driving out to Dover with a large part of the game to be played.

Have a good ride to Rochester. It is a haul, but well worth catching every inning when your kid's playing. You may want to consider a stop at The Holy Grail on the way back. Good food and a plentiful menu of English ales.

Good luck today.

7-4, however when I picked them they were 4-4. They have lost several low scoring close games.

"Seniors stay overnight at BG with "safe" activities all night" JAF

What's funny is thinking back to GNG in HS and college I don't remember his name and "safe" activities being in the same sentence too much, if at all.

Just heard BG escaped with a 6 - 4 victory at Spaulding.

No word if GNG is stopping in at the Rochester Elks Club or the Riviera Motel on the way back.

T&F - that's why Flight Night was "created" last year.... Memories of youthful indiscretions... and perhaps GNG stories.

I think it's a neat idea - kind of a way for everyone to get together and have that overnight lasting memory just before graduation. I just hope it doesn't influence the outcome of the baseball game if we're still in it... Perhaps a visit to the BG chapel and a rain prayer will help Very Happy

I've seen a few BG games this year. They're going to need Ferlan and Clapp to come up big in the tournament. They have a nice backstop in McQuarrie which helps. It was a nice win against Londonderry but not one to gloat too much about. They are a young team. Just two seniors start and I think 5 or 6 starters are sophomores including their ace Maloney. When you have two guys like Kinnon and Maloney you always have a chance, but as young as they are this might not be their year. They will scare the heck out of me the next two years though.
