Watching ESPN last night..
Watching ESPN last night and College Game Night went into a 5 minute complaint about referees and the principal of verticality. They showed no less than 6 or 7 calls in a game where a offensive guy jumped into the defender and got a block call. Seems ESPN agrees with me on this call. It is not being called correctly either in NH or on ESPN. Time for a new point of emphasis I guess.

Going to be a LONG time.....
This is never going to change overnight. That contact call has been in favor of the offensive player for decades. Any "point of emphasis" is not going to make a significant impact in the short term. We all know the best offensive players are being taught to create the contact. There is no way that the game is suddenly going to fire the pendulum in the other direction. The best we can hope for is a slow steady progression towards the officials calling it the way the rule is written. Otherwise - Rewrite the rule!

The problem is so many other times the defensive player does not take the charge instead they start falling backwards and flop. A few years ago the flop was a point emphasis at all levels of NH basketball. A flop should have resulted in a T, because it is dangerous and dirty. I think I saw one all year. The flop is the worse part of modern day basketball.

Almost impossible even in legal terms to prove intent.
In order for a referee to prove a player is acting up a charge instead of just chickening out or bracing themselves for contact is very difficult. I also think that leaning back means the defender is going away from contact... so if he is actually moving away and still gets uprooted... to me unless he falls before being hit it would still be a charge. Get there first and let the offensive player force the contact. That is all I need in my rule book to give a charge.

Walked into the Gym today
I walked into the gym today, saw who was refereeing and told the group I was with that there would not be a offensive foul called by this guy no matter what and offered 50 bucks if I was wrong.. My son deserved at least two offensive fouls alone and both were called blocks.. I had the entire gym laughing at my prediction. Needless to say I left with 50 in my packet!
