Boys Scoring Leaders
Quick plug for one of the best features NHSportsPage does. They get coaches, AD's and others to log statistics after each game on their website, which allows us to have cold hard facts about players performances. The NHIAA doesn't release this information, although I suspect they have it since each AD must fax the results to their office after every game.
So under each Division standings on their webpage you can now find scoring leaders. 2 games in, the minimum is 2 games played. This will change as the season progresses.
Check em out:

Re: Boys Scoring Leaders
Interesting to note - 2 games in, a Freshman, Patrick Welch from Pembroke is leading the Division in Scoring.
Not as a dig but adding perspective
I have already posted that I think Welch is the best Freshmen and will average 20 a game this year. However I have to add that so far the seniors from Milford are only playing about 15 minutes a game. None have seen a minute in a fourth quarter as of yet. All of their stats will be way out of wack this year as they were some last year with several blowout wins. So while numbers are great I love the fact that someone is actually tracking them in the state it may not be the whole story.

Re: Boys Scoring Leaders
Sure the Milford Boys scoring totals will be less, but I'm sure the state title at the end of the season is more important to them anyway. Same way Garnett, Pierce and Allen's individual stats would be higher (and were) when they were all the star on their own team.
Sure would be nice.
I think it would be great if they could post not only scoring but rebounding, steal, blocks and assists when doing this. I feel there is way to much emphasis put on scoring and as the true basketball guru's know its the kid or kids that can do it on both end of the floors in as many categories that help the team the most. Oh well i guess we can spread the word it wouldn't hurt right?

Re: Boys Scoring Leaders
Actually the software we use at NHSP allows for those stats - biggest problem...nobody has them! The basketball scorebook includes total points, 2 pointers, 3 pointers, and freethrows.
When I coached we had a team manager keep those stats, but it wasn't something that went into a game scorebook so it could hardly be considered "official".
You're right though, way too much emphasis on points, sometimes the best player on the court on a given night scores 4 points, but grabs 15 rbs and dishes 7 assists. Those players aren't highlighted at all unfortunately.
Good news is as NHSportsPage grows, these types of stats may actually get accumulated. Coaches are now doing the box scores on the site (if you are a coach, please go to NHSportsPage.com and email Dave Haley) and if they want, they can enter those stats.
Good feedback!

Your right again Basketballtime..
You are right. Last year I tracked a point guard that I follow to around 200 assist last year. I am quite sure that he had at least 100 in his sophomore year and will probably approach 200 again this year if he stays healthy. He could end up with over 500 assist for a career which to me is quite an accomplishment that will go unnoticed by many. When you think that 500 assist actually leads to more than 1000 points it is something that should be rewarded somehow. Unfortunately with many teams using kids as managers that sometimes do not even play the game it is a hard stat to track.
To bad we do reward scorers in this state and there are so many other statistics that help win games.

Does this have any effect on POY canidates?
How much influence will it have on head coaches picking the POY canidate? It would be sad to see a coach just reading some stats on a kid and making a choice on it don't you think? I'm sure they have more than that to go on right? For that matter does anyone know what the coaches base their picks on?

Re: Boys Scoring Leaders
Honestly... it probably depends a great deal on the coach.

Re: Boys Scoring Leaders
I guarantee coaches do not look at the scoring leaders when voting for all state and POY. Guarantee.
Coaches see this kids play at least once a year, some more depending on scheduling and holiday tournaments (which are really glorified scrimmages). They read the articles. But most importantly they talk amongst themselves ALL season long. Coach A is calling Coach B to learn what Coach C is doing, and they discuss the players to watch out for, etc. So there's a lot of knowledge being shared amongst the coaching fraternity.
I don't think we necessarily reward scorers in this state for the above reasons. While it's true - those players get most of the media attention based on the scoring stats, you have to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt when they vote on post-season honors, I mean, they ARE basketball coaches.
