March 1st games Empty March 1st games

Heading into tonight's games, March 1st, the playoff picture is still up in the air. Even though 6 playoff teams only have one game left, and the remaining 10 playoff teams have two games, very little is certain.

What we do know: -
- Concord, Dover, and Pembroke are out.
- 10 teams are in the hunt for a top 8 spot, and a first round home playoff game. (Only Pinkerton, North, Exeter, and Central are guaranteed top 8 ).
- 6 teams have a shot at top 4 and potential for two home playoff games. (Pinkerton & North are guaranteed top 4).
- Either Pinkerton or North will be the regular season Champions.

Since NHIAA standings are alphabetical when team records are tied, here are the current standings, including my calculation of tie-breaker rules. In parentheses is listed the potential highest seed - lowest seed of each team.
1) Pinkerton Astros 14-3 (1st- 3rd)
2) North 14-3 (1st - 3rd)
3) Exeter 13-4 ( 2nd - 5th)
4) Central 12-4 (2nd-6th)
5) Memorial 11-5 (4th -9th)
6) Merrimack 11-5 (3rd-9th)
7) Bedford 11-6 ( 5th-9th)
8 ) Winnacunnet 10-6 (5th - 10th)
9) South 9-7 (5th - 11th)
10) Salem 8-8 (9th -11th)
11) Londonderry 8-8 (8th -12th)
12) Alvirne 6-10 (11th - 16th)
13) Spaulding 6-11 (12th-16th)
14) Bishop Guertin 6-11 (12th -16th)
15) Keene 5-11 (12th -16th)
16) Trinity 5-11 (12th - 16th)
Out: Concord, Dover, Pembroke

So, now for tonights games. 7-2 on Friday, 84-27 on the season.

Londonderry (8-8 ) @ Alvirne (6-10) - Lancers coming on strong in the second half of the season. They take the 10 minute drive to Broncoville, and get the win.

#2 Nashua North (14-3) @ #7 Merrimack (11-5) - In the game of the night, the Titans travel to neighboring 'mack. North needs a win tonight, and an Astros loss on Friday to claim the regular season title. The Tomahawks will play a part in both of those games, and could be looking at 2 home playoff games or none. Reality is that North is hot. They get a tight win tonight and head to the playoffs on a high note as either the #1 or #2 seed.

Nashua South (9-7) @ #6 Memorial (11-5) - South fighting for a top 8 spot, Memorial for a top 4. Brandon Scott back from vacation, and Memorial takes care of business tonight.

Pembroke (0-16) @ #3 Central (12-4) - Pembroke's nightmare of a season thankfully ends tonight. Central wins.

Salem (8-8) @ Keene (5-11) - Salem is another team who has had a stronger 2nd half of the season. At this point, they are too strong for Keene, who will end up as the 16 seed. Salem wins, but can't catch South, and will finish as the 10th seed, playing any one of 5 teams.

#8 Winnacunnet (10-6) @ Dover (2-14) - Warriors (5th - The Warriors need two wins to guarantee a first round playoff game. With Dover and Keene on tap, they will meet this challenge. And this means the Lifeguard gets to come out for at least one more game!

Trinity (5-11) @ Bishop Guertin (6-11) - Winner of this game will likely be the #12 seed, and will avoid a top 4 team in the first round. But, given the state of D1 this year, does it really matter? The tag team of Walsh & Trickett vs. Olivieri & Rinko... BG has more depth, and wins this one.

Something that fell through the information cracks last night:

Concord upset Bedford with a buzzer beater. You would think that hurts Bedford as far as seedings go, but in this topsy turvy D1 boys' season, it might not really matter when the final bracket comes out.

Saw the Bedford loss last night. It's another one of those head scratchers.
The standings above included that loss. Had Bedford won, they would have been the current #5 seed at 12-5. Now, they face Exeter on Friday where a loss puts them closer to a road playoff game.

73-29 on the season. . . I need to finish it up with some strong picks this week. . .

Here goes. . .

Game of the Night presented by Tortilla Flats, home of the Strawberry Jalapeno Margarita. . . Sweet with a BITE!! #2 North v. #7 Merrimack-- Run and gun v. slow and steady. . . Can Merrimack keep North's high flying offense contained. . . Can North get Merrimack to play an up and down game? Two very different style. . . North wins.

Londonderry v. Alvirne-- Watch out for Coleman and the Lancers. . . they will not finish as a top 4 seed, but they are very much in the discussion for a top 4 team. Londonderry wins.

South v. #6 Memorial-- Both teams want to play at home first round. . . Edge tonight goes to Memorial, they are a tough team to beat shooting on their home floor. Memorial wins.

Pembroke v. #3 Central-- Central wins.

Salem v. Keene-- Will the real Keene stand up? This is a team that had top 8 talent that ran into injuries and just never put it together. Now they are staring down a possible trip to Pinkerton or North to start playoffs. They will need this game if they want to avoid those hostile environments. Salem has battled all year, and they are tough to play. Salem wins.

Trinty v. BG-- BG is tough to play at the C-Dome. Trinity has shown moments of being a top 8 team, but with just 5 wins, it has not been consistent. BG wins

#8 Winnacunnet v. Dover-- Winnacunnet no doubt got a gift from the basketball gods and with that the ability to host a playoff game in their hands. Winnacunnet will not let that gift go. . . Winny wins.

Exeter closed February with a 69-58 win over Spaulding on senior night Monday, setting up a showdown with Bedford in its regular season finale with a top four berth on the line. The Blue Hawks were balanced offensively with Cody Morrissette scoring 18 points and setting up teammates for easy finishes with his unselfish play. Tim Larkin was dangerous from deep, adding 15 points, and Bryant Holmes battled foul trouble, and face-guarding defenders, to reach double figures with 11. The biggest shot of the night, however, belonged to solid sophomore Alex Swett, who drained a corner three late in the game to break open a four point contest. Exeter has numerous weapons on offense and they like to extend defensively with ball pressure. Holmes' all-state play requires constant attention and Morrisette is poised and polished beyond his sophomore status.

Spaulding countered with a developing cast that has turned the corner, playing with Division I welterweights for four quarters. They have adjusted to the pace and physicality of D1 with two freshmen and three juniors in their starting five, but they are still learning to duck the knock-out punch of D1 heavyweights. Cal Connelly (19.7 pts/gm) was impressive once again with a game-high 28 points on four treys, numerous post-up moves and strong attacks of the rim. The 6'5" junior, who has scored 24, 26, 20 & 28 in Spaulding's last four games (three of them wins), was shadowed for 94 feet by Exeter defenders. Classmate Matt Roy continues to develop as a deep threat, knocking down three from long range while scoring 15 points. Freshmen Keagan Calero and Arie Breakfield are impressive and contributing as freshmen, but their consistent impact on the game night-in-and-night-out is still a year or two away.
These two teams could very easily meet in the prelims as Exeter sits in the 3/4 spot and Spaulding resides in the 13/14 slot with 1 game left. The main difference between them? The Hawks have impact players playing roles, while the Raiders have role players trying to make an impact.

You didn't think it wouldn't be interesting at Memorial tonight, did you? South wins 68 to 60. Frechette doesn't start for South. He was definitely player of the game. Memorial had nobody who defended him well. For Memorial a/k/a "As The World Turns", they were missing a few key players, but Scott was back from vacation...... "One Life To Live" or the new soap opera:

"All Of Jack's Children"

Total class move by Nate Mazerolle and the South team before the start of their game with Memorial last night:

Moe Bilodeau was one of the referees in the game. This is his last week of refereeing HS basketball. Last night was his next to last game. The South team came over to Moe Bilodeau and gave him good wishes and shook hands.

Just a TOTALLY class move by South and a TOTALLY class move by a Classy guy, Nate Mazerolle.

T&F - great to see a team show that recognition and respect. Where is Moe's last game?

Frechette doesn't start? Was it Senior night? I know many teams try to start all Seniors on those nights.

Last nights results probably muddled the picture more than clarifying it. But, two seeds were locked in:

- North, Pinkerton, Exeter, and Central will be seeds #1-4, and will host the first 2 rounds, assuming they win.
- Memorial, Merrimack, Bedford, Winni, and South will be seeded #5-9. (You don't want to be #9)
- Londonderry will be the 10 seed
- Salem will be the 11 seed
- BG, Keene, Alvirne, Spaulding, and Trinity will fill out seeds 12-16. BG can not drop to 16, and Trinity can not reach the 12 spot. Everything else is open.

Can't wait for Friday night.

OTB - It was senior night for Memorial. South is hosting Dover this Friday in their last game. One would think South will start their seniors on Friday.

So again, with Frechette not starting and Memorial missing some key players last night, it was:

"As The World Turns" @ the 1 Crusader Way basketball court scratch

Moe's last game will be this Friday at Central. His partners will be very appropriate for his "Good Bye Game." If you go to Central this Friday, please give Moe some nice words for 40 + years of a referee job well done!! cheers cheers cheers

Moe is a staple on the NH basketball courts. . . he will be missed.

OTB. . . The only thing to add to your analysis is that North cannot fall any lower than the #2 seed.

Excited for Friday and really excited to get our 2016 bracket challenge started.
