Thursday Thoughts Part 2

Post  Clancy on Fri Mar 27, 2015 6:42 pm

Great Article from Dave today regarding the state of AAU basketball and the misplaced beliefs.
It's time there was a discussion about the current state of developmental basketball. Or we will be telling our grandkids we remember when the US had the best basketball players in the world, as there washing the Cricket World Cup.

I love the part about the weird culture of AAU how lends towards self centeredness and bad basketball. Steve Kerr and Dave couldn't have had it more right!

The fact is count games to practices high school is 4 practices to 2 games every week, with a solid 15 practices before it starts. What's AAU 1practice maybe 2, to 4 games in a weekend. It is not possible to teach basketball in that amount of time

The biggest reason certain kids choose certain AAU coaches is they didn't like what they heard from there high school coaches. AAU coaches have the luxury of doling out playing time without asking for the hard work in return.

If you take a look at some of the top names on any list (Jeremy released one yesterday) many of those kids are nomads. Multiple AAU programs, multiple high schools, no real buying into the process.

Almost all kids get "brokered" by an AAU coach to go to Prep school. They have become sort of the bridge. Now the two kids at the top of yesterdays list are great players, and the order of the top 5 could probably be argued. But the next 3 of those kids are going to experience playing for there community in front of thousands of people. An experience to last a lifetime. Not sure when AAU coaches focus kids on where they are going to be getting recruited, that the players get the full experience of playing on a team could give them.

Thanks to Dave for tackling this issue
