An error on the D-2 Boys list: Loden Formichelli is from Portsmouth and Schuyler Hedberg is from St. Thomas. They are listed the other way around.

Congratulations to all.

Nice article by John Habib on Queen City coaches, Danny Bryson and Mike Wenners, receiving their OFFICIAL Coach of the Year awards:

Coach of the Year awards on the high school level are not to be taken for granted. Like Spirou and D’Allesandro on the college level, high school coaches also spend countless hours trying to make their programs the best they can be.

It was long overdue but good to see Manchester Central girls’ head coach Mike Wenners, who just completed his 13th season, receive his first Division I girls’ basketball coach of the year honor. His team earned the third seed in the Division I tournament, reached the semifinals before losing to Londonderry and finished 16-5.

During his tenure, Wenners has managed to take his program to the state final once (2008) and the Final Four four times. That’s pretty good considering that Nashua, Bishop Guertin of Nashua, Londonderry and Winnacunnet of Hampton have dominated Division I since 2002.

“I don’t think about awards, but it’s an honor to get this one,” said Wenners. “I’ve already said this award is going to be shared by the entire team, especially my three graduating seniors (Mary Soares, Natasha Velez, Caitlyn Vincent). It also goes out to my three assistant coaches, Doug (Chandler, 10 years at Central), Kim (Barbee, six years junior varsity coach) and Kara (Bernard, freshman coach, four seasons). They all deserve this.”

Wenners started his coaching career in 1992 under former Little Green boys’ varsity coach Mike Fitzpatrick. Wenners was the freshman coach for two seasons and the JV coach for five seasons under Fitzpatrick. He also served two JV seasons under current coach Dave “Doc” Wheeler before taking over the girls’ varsity program in 2002.

Across town, Manchester West’s Danny Bryson was named the Division II boys’ basketball coach of the year. West lost to Portsmouth on opening day, rattled off 17 straight wins and lost to St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover in a prelim game at Quinn Gym.

“I’m happy for Danny because he paid his dues starting out as an assistant coach at West under (former varsity coaches) Colin (Burke) and Sam (Carey),” said Wenners.

“Danny has done a fantastic job coaching that West team, both on and off the floor,” said Wenners. “The players have bought into his message and he’s just a total class person. He deserved that award this year.”
