Someone please explain to me how the NHIAA has any jurisdiction over a charity game played in August. These kids are representing themselves not their schools. Was hoping the new leadership would put the kids 1st.

NHIAA does it again Empty Re: NHIAA does it again

If the game were being played at a non school site and billed as an AAU All Star event would the NHIAA have a say? What if the game were played in July? I assume the "policy" is a result of some issue long ago where somehow someone figured out a loophole in the system and this policy plugged that loophole with a giant corkscrew which will be very difficult to remove. Perhaps something the new director can have his "people" look into... Especially considering the cause and result.

I assume since the Fall Season starts (practices for sure and some school years) by the time the game is being played - that means any NHIAA student athlete (current or "potential") would have to abide by the NHIAA rules. I remember reading in the Telegraph last Spring how the Nashua High basebal teams had some issue regarding this policy with respect to a few hockey players that competed in some similar all star type event thus impacting their baseball eligibility - although I thought the result was only a few games of suspension...

Now one thing I disagree with Mr Timbas on is having some government agency oversee the NHIAA. Not withstanding the less government stance - it seems a non government institution should be the watchdog (that's what the blogs are for, right? :-)). Let's face it - the NHIAA (as has been aptly pointed out in the past) is "governed" (for lack of a better word) by the Principals and Athletic Directors all of whom work for a government entity. So having some other government agency oversee that seems pointless to me.

I think what the NHIAA wants is someone to come to them with the plan prior to the event, not "find out about it" at some point in time later. I suspect we'll stop seeing better players in HS uniforms as their parents will being to focus on more direct recruitment opportunities in whatever sport they participate. I certainly don't hear of these types of issues in baseball where for sure there are U18 "travel" or "all star" teams that play in tournies. I think some consider Legion to essentially be an extension of the high school season. So if Legion has an all star team and they play a game, does that mean anyone that played in that game would have their NHIAA eligibility "in jeapordy"? Why is it basketball that is just a lightning rod for this?

NHIAA wanted a piece of the proceeds!  If they were getting $$$$ they'd have sanctioned it in a heartbeat!  So what's stopping them from removing "All-Star" from the heading so the boys can play?  Collins was hand picked by his (long time friend) predecessor knowing he would continue the bullshit. The NHIAA continues to shine a spotlight on their own incompetence, they've become a joke!

NHIAA does it again Empty Re; Not Again

The NHIAA is not out to get anyone on this basketball game. Actually, the new Director had a friendly conversation with the organizer of this event. If this event had been scheduled before the beginning of Fall Sports there would have been no problem. The organizer was not aware of this NHIAA rule and he apologized to the NHIAA for not knowing. It is clearly stated that once the Fall season starts that no Jamborees, Tourneys, etc. can be played. Baseball gets slack because the Tourneys are played in the Summer when there is no NHIAA season going on. The new Executive Secretary actually felt very bad about this because it is a Charity Event. But the rule is definitely there. You can argue that the rule is stupid but he must enforce what is currently in the NHIAA Handbook. If you want to get upset why are more people not getting upset at the Seacoast United Soccer Rule that if athletes participate on their certain "elite" teams that they cannot play HS soccer. They are determining that their "elite" teams are more important than a HS team. That is both exclusionism and elitism.

This rule has been a part of the NHIAA by laws for over 15 years. Do you think it might be time for these AAU programs, parents, and coaches to actually read & learn rules that have been in place as long as these kids have been alive?

All they need to do is go to the NHIAA website. Can't blame Pat Corbin's personal bias on this one. I agree that it is a great cause. I suggest that the organizers petition the NHIAA for sanctioning. No the NHIAA does not want ANY cut of the money and any suggestion of such is pure ignorance.

re: martink w/r/t Seacoast United

So parents/players then choose whether playing HS or Elite soccer will give them a better chance at getting into college to play soccer... Precisely what I said we'll start seeing in other year-round sports such as basketball. Hockey is another example where many of the better players choose to play Juniors rather than NHIAA. Where do colleges look to get talent - certainly not at an NHIAA game in the middle of the boondocks where it's easy for a player to look good. They want to see that same player against equal talent. Baseball, Softball, and Lacrosse can get a "free pass" because their travel teams play during the summer, but there are still a few that sneak into the Fall season...

I think 15 years ago there was less of a "glut" of these elite or travel teams and if/when one did pop up - it stuck out like a sore thumb to the NHIAA. AAU used to be elite, but I'd say less so now. Now each sport seems to have it's own set of elite, travel, or showcase teams/leagues with high entry and travel costs. With so many now, it's hard to not have players involved in these teams. No longer do we see the 3 sport athlete. There's plenty of blame to go around, but heck if I'm able to get any money off my college tuition bill for 4 years and I "believe" my child/athlete is good enough, then paying that bill/fee to the travel/elite team could be a good investment. Yes, I know - who deems good enough and there are far too many bit/role players who play and are perhaps being sold a bill of goods that isn't completely true. That's why it's so important to keep your head up and do your own work too especially in the how much do I really get in scholly money and is that worth it compared to what I'm paying.

100% correct JAF. This event is not going to make or break any of these kids opportunities at getting exposure. This is where the AAU community needs to begin working with the NHIAA and organizing events like this within the rules set forth by the NHIAA. The argument that one all star game will somehow determine the athletic future of these kids is laughable. EVERY ONE of these athletes attended high exposure AAU tournaments or camps in the live recruiting period and were seen by dozens if not more schools. When I was a college assistant coach, I was at 3 or 4 events like Hoop Mountain, Eastern Invitational, ABCD in New Jersey, or Five Star in a two week period and evaluated 100's of players and watched 20 - 30 of our recruits against top talent. I never would have used an All Star event in NH to determine if a player was worth recruiting. Heck, NH can't beat Vermont in the sr game each year...

NHIAA does it again Empty classroom

Post  8992 Thu Aug 14, 2014 9:12 am

It’s just important what the kid’s can do in the classroom as it is on the playing field. There are plenty of college academic scholarships if you put in the time and effort. If you can perform in the classroom as well as on the playing field than it can make it easier for some quality colleges and university coaches to recruit you.
