Well, this is just so appropriate to end this season with cancellations and postponements. I was getting worried because it was over 3 weeks since the last round of snow related game changes. I was getting worried we might actually start enjoying some semblance of Spring around here. Knowing winter is now dragged out for another week or two with snow, ice, power outages and frigid temps just brings an incredible amount of warmth to my basketball heart. Wink

From the UL:

Coming bad weatherpostpones NHIAA tourney contests

On its web page, the NHIAA’s “Special Alert” feature is getting many hits this week. That happens when inclement weather forces the state association to shuffle its schedule for tournaments.

And that’s the case today as a winter storm invades the Granite State, forcing the NHIAA to postpone tournaments statewide.

In boys’ basketball, the Division II semifinals will now be played Thursday at the University of New Hampshire. Portsmouth will meet Lebanon at 6 p.m. and Pembroke will play Pelham at 8 p.m.

The Division III semifinals have been moved to Friday at Southern New Hampshire University. Conant of Jaffrey and Berlin will play at 6 p.m. followed by Hopkinton and Campbell of Litchfield 8 p.m. The two winners will play for the state title on Sunday at 2 p.m. at SNHU.

In girls’ basketball, the Division I semifinals will be held Thursday at SNHU. Bedford and Nashua North collide at 6 p.m. and Londonderry and Pinkerton of Derry will clash at 8 p.m. The two winners will play Sunday at 6 p.m. for the state title at SNHU. The Division II finals between Coe-Brown of Northwood and Merrimack Valley of Penacook will be held Sunday at noon at SNHU.

Good thing they postponed the D1 Girls and D2 Boys semi final games tonight. It would've been terrible for all the fans to get wet walking in the rain at the SNHU and UNH parking lots.  Surprised Shocked Wink Laughing Very Happy Question

Geez that Mother nature just won't give up winter quite yet - will she... Fickle woman...

Of course the NHIAA website still as the alert for yesterday up on their website.

With some schools cancelling and having policies regarding playing on cancelled school days - will the NHIAA overrule that and force them to drive to wherever tonight? Or do we push back another day...

I bet the "Powers That Be" are now whishing they played the games last night.

I know it would've been inconvenient for the buses to drive in the rain and for fans to walk in wet parking lots  Question Question Question Question Question Question Question

An excellent question.... we know that in all matters regarding discipline and scheduling of regular season games that the NHIAA defers to the member schools.  Do they reverse course this evening and require teams to play?  Will individual schools overturn their own policies for the event?

Stay tuned.... Oh, wait. If anyone knows WHERE to stay tuned to? Info is usually only available via the parlor whisper game route...   clown clown clown

Re: Girls D1 and D2 games Changed

Here's the scoreboard for the 8 teams scheduled to play tonight in D1 Girls and D2 boys semi finals and how they handled today's weather:

Boys D2:
Pembroke - 2 hour delay
Pelham - Closed
Lebanon - Closed
Portsmouth - Had school

Girls D1:
Bedford - Had school
North - Had school
Pinkerton - Closed
Londonderry - 2 hour delay

I'm sure the NHIAA, UNH and SNHU are scrambling as we speak to decide how to handle the games tonight or the rescheduling's as the season time frame is now painted into a very small time corner. This all could have been avoided if they waited until the day of an event to make a decision as to whether or not to play instead of going with internet hype and postponing events 24 hours before the games are to be played. Too many game nights were postponed this season based on "What could happen" as opposed to "What is happening."

The NHIAA has to think long and hard about liability if they decide to play the games tonight. Let's say one of the schools who cancelled school today and has in it's policies NO AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES and they travel to one of the semi final games. Somebody hits a 2 foot by 2 foot patch of ice, God forbid and gets in an accident......... Well, there's a problem there.

Maybe, next season we'll see some games postponed because of sun blindness or it being too windy  scratch  scratch  scratch

So if tonight's games are, once again, postponed until tomorrow night, how will the advancing teams be able to prepare for Saturdays finals?

This is from the NHIAA site:

D. Tournament Dates:
Dates for tournaments cannot be changed except by the hosting school district for events at the home of
the higher seed (Preliminaries and Quarterfinals) and the NHIAA Office for events at neutral sites
(Semifinals and Finals). Date changes will only occur in the event of severe weather conditions making
travel and/or the venue unsafe or when a conflict arises with a high school graduation. The one
exception to this policy is that no tournament events in the sport of basketball are to be scheduled on the
second Tuesday in March, mandatory voting day in New Hampshire. It is permissible for hosting
schools or the NHIAA, by mutual agreement, to alter the time of an event on the scheduled date to
accommodate venue requirements or other conflicts. Sports committees should consider potential
conflicts with known religious holidays, political events such as voting, etc. to the extent possible,
however, in reality tournament schedules are often dictated by the venues. Also, in setting schedules
over a year in advance it is understood that avoiding many potential conflicts may be impossible and
impractical especially in that the participating teams are not typically known until a day before the
tournament begins. Finally, due to the unpredictability of New England weather, time needs to be built
into planned schedules to allow for potential cancellations and postponements.

Also, I heard as of 11:30 am there are NO CHANGES for tonight. The games, at least at SNHU are still on.

Some one told me that "NHIAA can trump any schools activity/cancellation policies as long as NHIAA deems the games are playable."

I just searched the NHIAA web site under policies and regulations and couldn't find that particular statement though.

Even though Pinkerton cancelled school today their athletic web site just tweeted the Pinkerton vs Londonderry game at 8 pm at SNHU is still on.

T and F - thank goodness you follow everything on Twitter and have a zillion connections - because as of this moment the SPECIAL ALERT button makes no mention of tonight's events. As I've said before, here's hoping the next NHIAA Director puts a little effort into the website.

I also heard if they really ran into a snag with the D2 Boys semifinal games, then they might move the D2 Ship to SNHU on Sunday.

What a day that would be at SNHU. They already have:

D2 Girls Final @ 12:00 pm

D3 Boys Final @ 3 pm

D1 Girls Final @ 6:00 pm

Can you imagine trying to fit the D2 Boy's Ship in there? They'd probably have to go with a 11 am, 2 pm, 5 pm and 7:30 pm schedule format to allow traffic to transition in and out of N. River Rd and the SNHU parking lots. All I have to say is if this happens Thank God the Tap House Grille is operating just down the road 5 minutes away in Hooksett.

T & F's schedule will be:

9:30 am - Brunch at Tap House (Bloody Mary Bar)

11 am D2 Girls Ship

2 pm D3 Boys Ship

3:30 Late lunch/Early dinner at Tap House (Rotating draft selection)

5 pm D2 Boys Ship

7:30 pm D1 Girls Ship

9:30 pm Late dinner/Early brunch at Tap House (Rotating Night Cap selection)

From NHIAA:

Basketball - Boys Division II: POSTPONED
Will be played tomorrow Friday, March 14th at Exeter High School. Please review the bracket for site and times.
Thank you.

Lebanon vs Portsmouth @ 5:30 pm

Pembroke vs Pelham @ 7:30 pm

Both games at Exeter High School

Absolutely fascinating. So, will the D2 Boy's Ship still be played at 3 pm on Saturday? If it is then the winner of the Pemby - Pelham game will have exactly 18 hours of turn around time from ending buzzer of semi game to Tap off of the Ship....... The word unfair comes to mind if this scenario plays out.

With the rescheduling of the D2 Boys Semis it makes you wonder if we're getting closer to having the D2 Boys Ship at SNHU on Sunday.

Let's just say a player or 2 turns an ankle in the Friday semis at Exeter. It'd be nice to have an extra day of rest instead of turning around 18 to 20 hours later between Semis and Ship. Not too mention the unfairness of not being able to prepare for the Championship game with a practice. Strange that the most important part of a long 3 month season gets condensed into a 20 hour time frame for the D2 Boys.

The new director of the NHIAA must make provisions for next season schedule-wise to ensure this bad scenario doesn't take place again. Next season will have the same condensed season where you lose a week at the start and a week at the end.

Mike Tyson said, "Everybody has a plan until they get hit with the first punch." For the HS basketball season with the NHIAA the quote could be, "Everybody has a plan for the HS basketball season schedule until you get hit with a snowstorm, or 2, or 3, or 4, etc. etc."

Simply astounding. One has to wonder (and don't take this the wrong way) if someone is thinking "it's only d2 - who cares".

I'm sure Portsmouth fans are THRILLED and Lebanon fans are LIVID

Was Bedford's gym not available? At least it's in the middle and the site is used for other NHIAA events.

At least they didn't move it to Derryfield... Or West

Let's connect the dots Grassy Knollers:

Pembroke had a 2 hour delay. Portsmouth had school. There is no reason to think either of these schools didn't want to play the D2 boys semis tonight at UNH.

Pelham didn't have school, but they weren't in a snow belt, so no problem for them to travel to UNH to play tonight.

Lebanon didn't have school and was in a snow belt.... around 8 to 10 inches.

Given the above information which of the 4 wheels do you think fell off the UNH Semi-Final bus????  Wink

Given that Pelham and Lebanon-(understandably) had no school today will they still be able to hold practices tonight? Typically when school is cancelled all school related activities/sports are required to be cancelled as well.

T&F
I'm just referencing the fact that if they can't practice today it unfortunately adds to the disadvantage of their situation. In addition, If either of those two teams win they will be even less able to prepare for the finals. Not that any of the four teams will have that luxury...

no problem 22 but I will not begrudge Pelham & Lebanon from having practices tonight even though their schools cancelled today. If Portsmouth and Pembroke are going to have practice tonight then the only fair & sportsman thing to have happen would be for all 4 teams to have practice tonight.

If either Lebanon or Pelham get sanctions for having a practice this afternoon or this evening then this world is really getting closer to Armageddon than what I originally thought.
