Running up scores? Empty Running up scores?

Post  SeacoastBall Thu Feb 13, 2014 3:44 pm

I played in high school and in college and I remember being up 102-57 in college I didn't play much I was a freshman and I got in the last 5 minutes and of course it was my time to shine and preform I came out and scored 16 points hit a couple 3's as I was the 3rd string gaurd and I remember the opposing gym we were at was yelling at us calling us busch league but is it running up the score if subs are in who don't normally play? Are these kids not supposed to shoot and make the most out of their time? I saw this recently in a high school game were subs were in and the game was out of control and opposing fans were ripping the lead team but it wasn't starters out there? When is enough truly enough? Are you not supposed to score up so much?

I don't believe the team with an insurmountable lead should put the end of their bench in the game and ask them to stop scoring and just stands there. The are entitled to play. However, pressing, trapping, or jacking-up 3 balls should be off the table. Instead, run your offense. Have your 12th man come off a screen and bury a jumper. Have them curl and take it to the rim. There is a right way and a wrong way to play this garbage time.

I have no problem with the end of the bench guys playing and scoring within the framework of the offense. Having been on the losing end of some blowouts, I think it's more frustrating/embarassing to see minutes run off while the lead team plays keep away and the trail team looks like the Washington Generals. Just score already and give us the damn ball back.
