Nice Article on the Londonderry Lancers !!!

Post  Tuesday and Friday on Sat Jan 11, 2014 12:27 am

I had to give this article by Roger Brown it's own thread posting. It's about my beloved Lancer boy's team. With their road victory over Spaulding tonight they are 4 - 0 and riding high on their White horses. They have gone on the road 4 times and come away with 4 Ws.

I've stuck with MY Lancers through thick and mostly thin as of late, but I'm proud to say they are in 1st place at 4 - 0 in D1.

Let's see they have their home opener on Tuesday vs Concord. If my schedule is free around 7 pm that night.................

Roger Brown's High School Basketball: Londonderry's depth charges

YOU KNOW things are going well when your coach's No. 1 concern is too many made 3-pointers.

That's the case with the Londonderry High School boys' basketball team, which is 3-0 in Division I after pounding Manchester West Thursday night and had made 19 3-pointers in those two victories. The Lancers tossed in 10 3-pointers in a 74-52 triumph over Manchester Memorial, and then threw in nine more during a 64-63 victory over Winnacunnet of Hampton on Monday night.

"That's our problem," first-year Londonderry coach Nate Stanton said. "I want to attack the basket. We rely way too much on the 3 and it gets us in trouble."

The Lancers have overcome most of the trouble they've encountered thus far this season. In addition to its Division I victories, Londonderry went 2-1 in the Greater Lowell Holiday Tournament. Its only loss came against Chelmsford, which went on to win the tournament.

Londonderry's strength may be its scoring depth. Freshman Jake Coleman scored a team-high 16 points and was one of four Londonderry players who scored in double figures during the victory over Memorial. Junior Marc Corey had a quiet night against Memorial, but scored a game-high 23 in Monday's victory over Winnacunnet.

Senior guard Andrew Coveney also returned to the Londonderry roster this season. Coveney made 27 3-pointers as a sophomore, but did not play last season because of a knee injury.

"Every night anybody can step up," said Stanton, who was an assistant coach at Salem each of the last two years. "We need to play unselfish because we have multiple guys who can put in 20."

"Very athletic," Winnacunnet coach Jay McKenna said when he was asked about Londonderry following Monday's loss. "All interchangeable. All shoot. All handle. All do a lot of really nice things."

Londonderry will play its fourth road game tonight (at Spaulding of Rochester), before it faces Concord at home Tuesday.

"We're good, but we still have more to work on," Stanton said. "We do have some good shooters, but I have to convince them that sometimes it's better to go to the basket."

Extremely excited about their start. Balance is important in any league and it seems as though the system lends itself to multiple scoring options and depth. They may get in to trouble if and when they run into big bodies on the glass and that hot shooting goes cold on a random Tuesday in February when they have to play on the road. However, I must add that it's a pleasure to see the job Nate Stanton is doing with these boys. I feel like the formula for winning games in Division 1, speaking as a former player and young coach, doesn't have to be super complicated. Make your opponents uncomfortable defensively, maximize your opportunities on the offensive end, and lastly have some camaraderie and enthusiasm. In the first quarter of the season, Londonderry has exemplified those key points. Credit to the staff and players!!!!

While Londondery did not have a good shooting night (mostly due to turnovers). Anytime you make the trek to Rochester and come away with a win you have to be happy. 4 road wins with 4 different leading scorers and 6 kids averaging in double figures. They won tonight because they held a team that was previosly averaging 64 points a game to 30 (ie. winning with defense). One unit , one family. one mission.

Remember what I said about the correlation of T & F wearing tee shirts of high schools and those high schools winning state basketball championships.
