Summer Thoughts Empty Summer Thoughts

Post  Tuesday and Friday Thu Aug 01, 2013 12:39 am

It sure has been one hot and humid summer. My 2 ply toilet paper has been unfurling at a 1 ply rate which has made for some major inconveniences. The dollar bills in my wallet have almost folded down to nothing with the extreme humidity. The weather has taken a turn for the better which is heaven sent.

- I participated in some games at the BST summer league at SNHU. One thing struck me while participating in these games and watching other games. There will be a SEVERE lack of Bigs in D1 this upcoming season. There were a lot of small lineups taking the center tap at the start of a lot of the summer games. Most of the Top 10 scorers in D1 last season were senior Bigs, like Lunn, Paradis, Preston, Gabriel, etc. They are all graduated and there is a huge black hole of Bigs.

- So, with the lack of Bigs or bigger teams, you have to focus in on Trinity, Exeter and BG. Trinity will have a starting front line of 6’7 Wenyin Gabriel, 6’4 Carmen G and 6’0 Pat Keefe. Can you say possible repeat for Trinity? Throw in Rhodes and Otis returning and a couple of good players moving up from JV…. Well, you probably have your Pre-season #1 team. Don’t sell BG short (pardon the pun). Even though they won’t have a Lunn-like player they do have size at just about every position. I foresee Noone having a big year. Exeter will be tough with 6’8 ish Max Medley. They beat BG by 15 points in the finals of the Exeter summer tournament a few weeks ago. Migs did say I could quote him that he “LOVES” his team for next season. When Migs loves his team that usually means final four, state title game etc.

- Central will have an intriguing team. They are small. They are still skinny. When they line up for a tap you don’t know if the JV team is there size wise. They have DD, Plentzas, Hansen, Duffley, McDonald and Makris and a couple of others. They will win their share, but for them to be a Top 5 team they must be clicking on all cylinders as in 5 to 6 guys scoring. They don’t have a legit scoring threat like recently graduated Pelletier who could hang 16 to 24 on a nightly basis. The Little Green will have to produce team scoring efforts to hang in the Top 5 this upcoming season. One of their biggest advantages will be the aforementioned lack of Bigs throughout D1. This factor will help Central over the course of the season.

- If you have a chance to catch the Bell Brothers from Brady, you should do it. Their symbiosis on the court is one of the most watchable things in NH hoops. I had a good seat to watch them perform against Bedford and the 2 brothers dominated the Bulldogs in the back and front court.

- Speaking of Bedford they might be the team that dropped the most in vertical and horizontal size from last year to this year. Fitzy will definitely have to burn the midnight Xs and Os to get this group into the Top 8 this season.

- Memorial has their own summer league going with West, Dover, Windham and Londonderry participating among others. Tschief I hear is NOT going to be on Memorial. They do have Kabongo, Omaru and Gop. They will score, they will excite, but will they win the mental game? Londonderry has been looking like they might rebound with an invigorated group. Coveney has been playing well coming back from the injured knee. Zach Stevens, the Mayor of Londonderry, has been coaching the Lancers in summer league. Jeez, I’m feeling Lancer refreshed myself. Could I possibly be doing steak tips, Lobster tails and Pumpkinhead from my Lancer suite? Or at least hot dog, chips, diet Coke with a Lancer basketball tee shirt? Hello Edge Hello ??

- Someone said to me, “West looks good in summer league. I think they’ll do some damage this season.” I said, “get back to me Jan. 15th to Feb. 1st and then we’ll talk.”

- Eric Gendron has looked very good this summer. He has a great chance to play some D2 college ball. The problem with the Tomo’s is their lack of paint presence. To be a Top 4 team Mack must get more consistent paint scoring and they also must defend in the paint. If it’s Gendron and scoring by committee and 1 or 2 players don’t step up consistently, then the fate they suffered to Exeter in the prelim loss last season will become a broken record for Mack fans.

- Pinkerton’s girls varsity coach, John Barry, has resigned. He wanted to coach another couple of years at least, but a doctor told him the stress of coaching wasn’t productive for him. Coach Barry always had the Lady Astros in the mix every year. They have one of the most solid programs in girl’s D1 basketball. Coach Barry was a good guy and a gentleman. He will be missed.

- Amra Elozovic has transferred from UMass Lowell to SNHU. When UML went to D1 she decided to stay in D2 and not make the move up to D1. She didn’t want to be part of a foundation-up program. She wanted to competitive at D2 and the SNHU situation presented itself to her. Good for her to realize what level she felt most comfortable with. I still love the fact she whispers sweet thoughts to referees in Bosnian to avoid on court sanctions. She is a Criminal Justice major, which is so appropriate, since she’s always pleading her case to referees in every game she plays.

- I had the pleasure of being in an AAU game earlier this season that Brandon Len’s younger sister participated in. Darn if she doesn’t play like him. She’ll be plying the Len family basketball skills at Souhegan High in the coming years. I believe her name is Mya? Pardon the misspelling if it’s there Len Family.

- I unburied a 1996 Class L Tournament program from my basketball closet. Central defeated Winny in the Ship with Ryan Day throwing over the Winny press to the likes of Dan Bowen, Matt Ruais and Calen Paquette among others. There were some interesting tid bits I noticed in the program. 12 teams made the playoffs that year. Portsmouth and Alvirne tied for 12th. They had a playoff game for the 12th spot at Raymond High School 3 days before the tournament started. Matt Bonner was a freshman on Concord. They finished 3rd with a 15 – 3 record. This would be the last year Bonner would lose his last game of the playoff season as Concord won the next 3 Ships. Nate Mazerolle was a very young asst. coach at Exeter under Kyle Hodson. Carlton Fisk’s nephew, Carrington, was on Keene. West’s varsity team looked like it was at least 50% from Bedford. John Barry was an asst. coach at Pinkerton to Tony Carnovale. Doc Wheeler assisted Fitzy on the Central Ship team and in the team pic he was wearing a remarkable sweater. I will show it to any Forum member if you come to the season kickoff party at the Pitts this season. When will that be Dave and Elliot?

- Friday August 2nd is a big night at SNHU with the finals of the BST summer league and the Sam Carey benefit game. Jeremy has a full run down on rosters for the Sam Carey game on the NH Notebook.

I hope you Forum members enjoy the rest of the summer. I hope my 2 ply toilet paper remains 2 ply and that the bills in my wallet expand instead of contract with the dreaded humidity.

Have you done your homework this summer? Central will be a better team this year then last year. I agree about the lack of size but the Little Green have 6' 4" Nick Mackris who has been lifting all summer, 6' 3" Tyler Kelly who started all year and has improved a ton, 6' 3" Colin Duffley and 6' 2" Brett Hanson who will probably be their point guard. This team will be a higher scoring team then last and you can take that to the bank. Perimeter shooting will be as good as anyone in the state with Dawson Dickson, Duffley, Hanson, Plentzas, and Sophomore Evan McDonald. Central will easily be a top four team and Hanson will replace Pelletier's scoring.

Summer Thoughts Empty Re: Summer Thoughts

Post  Tuesday and Friday Thu Aug 01, 2013 8:24 pm

Yeah Dj5 I've done my homeWork by running up and down the court at a pretty good pace. Very Happy

I'll take a wait and see attitude with Hansen "replacing" the scoring of Pelletier. The Central players must have lifted a lot of weights and consumed a lot of protein drinks since I last saw them. The grind of a 4 month season will tell the truth. Last year Central was tired, slower and beaten to the punch by most of the teams they played in late Feb and March. Maybe, they'll improve on that next season. Maybe, they'll be a Top 4 team. Maybe, they'll get to the Final Four in Durham. Wow, that was a lot of MAYBE.

If I were to do a pre season Top 8 Central would certainly get my serious consideration for Top 4. If they can get balanced legit scoring from 4 to 5 players/game and if Plentzas can have a healthy season and deal with thicker and stronger guards then Central has a good chance of making the Final Four. I reiterate..... The fact there will be an EXTREME lack of Bigs this season in D1 will work to Central's advantage with the type of team they will have next season. If the 2013/2014 Central team was playing last season they would have a tough time cracking the Top 4. There is a drop of talent and Bigs for the 2013/2014 season and this will help the "Little" Green. Cool

How's that for my homework assignment tonight? Wink

Good job doing your homework. I can't give you a gold star but I'm ok with a standard check mark....Very Happy. You are correct about the wait and see attitude as is the case with every new season. I also agree Central was a tired team last year. They had no depth so their young guys eventually wore down from all the minutes they logged. Lack of size is a theme that has plagued NH basketball for some time now. The game has also evolved and big men at all levels are not what they once were. Central's small and skinny guards were better then most other teams guards last year and surprise.....they are all back and better. Strength with the ball will not be an issue if the officials call the game correctly. Thick guards will be left in the dust as quickness, length and skill almost always wins out, especially in NH. We will all have to wait and see, but, I believe Central is a serious title contender provided everyone stays healthy.

Thanks for the praise..... I think Laughing

You say, "strength won't be an issue, if the game is called correctly."

I have to make a point about that. Basketball is a contact sport. There is incidental contact. It's in the rule book. Last season Central was adversely affected by incidental contact more than any upper echelon team I saw last year. Trinity and South used incidental contact to their advantage against Central last season. The Little Green players were taken off their lanes and their game with this. BG did the same thing to Central in the quarterfinals. If Central can be a better incidental contact team this season then they'll be in the Top 4. Remember, Trinity returns 4 starters, South will be very good and BG will be very tough and physical and I'll throw Exeter in the mix also.

Couldn't agree more on the lack of bigs in NH. Was at the Addidas Super 64 last week in Vegas and alot of those teams came in with 6'3' -6'4' being the shortest kid on the team.

T &F - just let me know when you plan on being at your Lancer Suite. I will ensure you get one of the hot dogs that hasn't turned green yet, the bag of chips from this year order, and a reasonably tepid diet coke.

The guards will be very strong this year in division one as almost every teams best guard is returning, but to say there is a lack of bigs this year is a huge understatement, I cant name one big that i can say with any confidence that when he gets the ball in the paint he will score it or draw a foul, while last year d1 was loaded with bigs

Other teams to consider as playoff teams:

Winni- They return their guard duo of ruffin and snollmeyer and those two together is gonna be hard for any team to deal with

Londonderry- This team should be must improved with good guard play in convey coleman and ball they all are lights out shooters and convey and coleman can attack the rim

Keene- lost only 3 seniors although their big man sarette will be hard to replace, they return their leading scorer in boulay and from what i heard they played conant a lot in the summer and played them very tough everytime

North- They have their best player in Lates returning but the question remains if they have enough help for him to get into the playoffs

Saw a bunch of games at the memorial league this summer. Have to say im very impressed by how much the lancers have improved over the year. I think the new coach has played a key role in this improvement/run

Wait a second..........Londonderry looks better in summer league games not because their best player returned from injury and they have a lot of kids that have been in the program to this point,,,and again it's only summer league..... but because of their new coach...who cannot and has not coached them yet...who has turned this thing around by early August, again..without even coaching them yet. Am I reading this right?

He was coaching the team towards the end of the summer leagues (Memorial, Hoops for Hope) after being officially named coach, so were lots of other NHIAA coaches. I believe they are not allowed to coach after the school year starts. Zach Stevens coached them most of the summer and did a fantastic job.

Love Zach Stevens....what I am saying is it is a little much to say his coaching in summer league, with no practices, had much of an impact.
Actually it's more than a little much...I'm sure he'll do fine but we need to pump the brakes in early August.

No offense to the new coach at Londonderry, from what I hear he is a great coach, but not even Phil Jackson could influence his squad in the short amount of time that he has worked with them.  If you are seeing an improvement it is probably just the kids working harder because he is at the game, believe it or not high school kids sometimes need motivation to actually play hard Very Happy

Stanton walked into a slam dunk.  The old coach left him with a roster full of talented players that all have experience.  Talent and experience should win in Division 1, Coach Stanton should have no problem finishing top 8, if not top 4 as long as he can keep people happy.  Stanton shouldn't have a problem keeping the assistant superintendent happy, seeing as how they are both Salem boys and the assistant superintendent went above and beyond to get Stanton the job.  His only challenge will be keeping the rest of the Lancer "cheering for only son crowd" happy Shocked

Enough with the Lancers though

Trinity is Trinity. . . they are at the top of the hill and everyone is looking up, we all know that.  I was on the twitter world earlier today and read something interesting that could completely shake up who is a favorite. . . I read that Jesiah Wade is transferring to Central to play football.  If that is the case and he decides to play basketball for the Little Green I believe they have a real good shot of being back to take Trinity.  Jesiah is only 5'11'', but he jumps through the roof. . . I have seen this kid dunk with ease as an 8th grader.  You add him to Dickson, Hanson, Plentzas, Kelly, Matriks (sorry for the spelling) and a talented JV team from last year. . . this could be a team that dominates in Division 1, with the exception of Trinity.  Has anyone else heard this rumor?  And if it is true is he still looking to play hoops in the winter?

As a BG parent you have to understand how humorous it is to read that Jesiah could be transferring from one public HS to another public HS in order to play football and/or basketball. I have no idea if your rumour is true, but it did make me chuckle especially with the apparent glee to which it was reported. Thankfully he didn't end up at Trinity or there'd need to be "something done" in order to stop the illegal transfer of players. Razz

BTW: I believe the NHIAA has a rule/policy about players transferring regarding getting a "release" from one school - ask Paige Parkinson's parents - they know all about it... This would also be a transfer during Senior year for Jesiah... Personally I think it would be a mistake - let's just say I think he'd get "lost" in Central; whereas, those at the much smaller Campbell watch out for him and make sure he gets through his education.

Yes, Wade transfered to Central.....

Highly unlikely he plays hoop at Central......

I don't believe you need a waiver/release when your family moves from one town to another??

Crossover, I strongly disagree. I spoke with a bunch of Central players who said that Wade has already been to open gyms and he is excited to play basketball as well as football.

Yes, there is a waiver process that needs to happen. When a player transfers schools, the sending school needs to sign off saying that the move is not for athletic reasons. I am sure that Central is smart enough to tell Wade to make sure he states something different than athletics as his reason for switching schools.

manchfan,

I find that very interesting because I got my information straight from the horses mouth......I'm not saying he won't (see below) but that is the information I got from Jesiah himself!

As far as transfering.....the reason why he has transfered is because he moved from Litcfield to Manchester.
This is not the Paige Parkinson scenario.........she did not move to a new town and switch schools (Public to Public). She chose to transfer from a Public to Private to play for her AAU coach.

T &F,

I'd have to agree with you about Doc and think Wade can be persuaded....I change my prognosis to 50/50

I hope someone looks out for Jesiah at Central - I know I did my fair share back in the 5th/6th grade years on my travel hoops team. Some of you probably wouldn't believe how raw he was back then... Couldn't dribble, but he sure could run and rebound... Sometimes it'd take 5 in a row before he got the ball to go down... Anyway, I'm surprised it took this long for a transfer to happen. I remember hearing he was considering Pinkerton a few years ago - imagine he and Manny in the same backfield (shudder!!!).

The transfer/waiver rules are on the NHIAA website for anyone that really cares. I don't - I just find humour in the hypocrisy of no one screaming how unfair it is that this is happening... If he was going to Trinity there'd be a lot of wailing going on. For anyone to believe the move to Manchester had nothing to do with playing at a D1 level vs. a D3 level is, well, laughable. He certainly won't get away with carrying the pigskin like a loaf of bread in D1 and he will find his speed matched by more players - it'll be interesting to see how things develop for him football wise. I hope he does well!

If the news on Jesiah Wade is true (I have a meeting tonight where I'm sure I'll find out for certain) it's a big get for that football team. He'll do well at that level.

As for basketball Jesiah is a terrific on the ball defender so he’d take pressure off of Dawson Dickson to guard quicker 1's. Offensively he wouldn’t help them much but he will hound you up & down the floor defensively and you need kids like that...

I'm trying to picture a 5 man unit on the floor where Plentzas is the power forward...that's going to be interesting to see..they're guard heavy.

If Luke Testa did in fact transfer from Pinkerton to Trinity then they are biggest favorite in that division since the days of Tyler Roche.

Yes, I heard Testa has transferred to Trinity. I'm sure this will rekindle the drum beating of "not fair" and "Trinity belongs in their OWN conference."

Can't say as I would blame people in other high schools for feeling this way. Trinity does play by a different set of rules than most other schools. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but if I'm a coach who sweats his Xs and Os off trying to build a program with what you have in your parameters and you watch Trinity reload and upgrade significantly with a blink of an eye or the filling out of an admission form with a check attached to it, it would be frustrating to a coach who has parameters. If Testa is indeed at Trinity, then this coming season I will probably just give the Pioneers the Ship and talk about who will fight for 2nd.

As far as Wade at Central goes...... He will give them a certain swag and chip on their shoulder that will benefit the LG. Yes, Dickson will have the defense pressure taken off of him because he has a tough time defending stronger and bigger guards. Don't discount "the nose out of joint" factor for certain Central players though. There will be certain LG players who were planning to play 20 to 28 minutes/game. With Wade now on board some of those players will be cut down to 16 to 20 minutes. How those players react to that and how Doc navigates these players over the mental land mines will be key for Central........

....... If they want to finish 2nd in D1 this upcoming season Wink Laughing Wink

No question about Trinity being stronger with Luke Testa. He's a great kid and a hard nosed player. Trinity will be the deepest team in the state which makes their issue of playing time a significant one. Mabor put the Pioneers over the top last year and without his presence they will not be the same in my opinion. They are the early favorite but I predict they will have a few losses on their resume come playoff time. Too much depth in high school is not a good thing, especially when paying to go to school and expecting significant minutes. I have a lot of respect for Coach Keefe and I'm sure he will figure it all out. Nobody should be crying about anything being unfair with Trinity reloading. Other teams need to accept the challenge and figure out a way to take them down. I remember the best Trinity team of all time which featured Lutz, Millard, Bonner and Brickley and they did not get the job done. Without getting the easy points inside, they will be just like everyone else, which means an off shooting night could very well result in a loss.
