Boys Division II Playoffs

Post  SeacoastDad on Thu Feb 28, 2013 11:31 pm

Starting a D-II thread.

Pembroke ends the regular season at a perfect 18-0, defeating Lebanon 56-49. Seven of Pembroke's wins this year were in single digits, so somebody could pull off an upset if they catch the Spartans on an off night.

With Lebanon's loss and Portsmouth's 64-46 win over Pelham, Portsmouth secures the two seed with a 15-3 record. Pelham could give some teams trouble in the tournament. They hung with Portsmouth through three quarters tonight. They have a good young player in 6'1" freshman Keith Brown, who I would guess had about 20 points tonight.

Because of the unbalanced schedule in D-II, there are several seedings that will have to use the "record against other teams in the tournament" tiebreaker. My version of microsoft excel only has about a million rows, so I can't figure out all the possibilities...

Congratulations and best of luck to all tournament teams!

That would really seem to open things up on Pembroke's side of the bracket- if they can get past Pelham, they'll have a 12 or 13 seed standing in the way of a trip to the finals.

The Windham/ Coe Brown Surf & Turf upset special reminds me of the same thing that happened in D1 about 3 years ago. I believe it was Alvirne and Londonderry. I think they were in the exact same situation. Londonderry shocked heavily favored Merrimack. I forget who Alvirne beat, but they wound up hosting Londonderry in the #12 hosting #13 D1 quarterfinal.

T&F...the upsets you are referring to where the 12 & 13 seeds met in the 2nd round @ Alvirne was actually #12 Alvirne beating #5 Merrimack, while your 13th seeded Lancers knocked off someone else...I think it might have been #4 Pinkerton...or Central that year.

Yes, that Merrimack team had Floras as a freshman and had the senior class where big things were expected. Mack was #1 or #2 all season, but went into a moribund tailspin in the last 1/3 of the season. Alvirne had Ryan Sweeney and a young Caleb Donnelly.

Thank you seacoastdad for referencing and bringing notice to division II basketball in the state of NH. Not enough credit is given outside DI on here in any sport.

If anyone on this D1 forum ( Razz ) is interested, we've got defending champ Portsmouth vs Souhegan in a Q-Final matchup at Stone Gymnasium. This is always a great rivalry, both in Football and Basketball, and features two of my favorite coaches, Jim Mulvey and Mike Heaney.

Souhegan is playing with a ton of emotion after the passing of their former teammate, Tony Barksdale. Portsmouth is the defending champs, but really this is a group of kids trying to make their own mark, since only a few of them saw minutes last year. Hope you'll tune in!
